In other news, the hand-fabricated tub is in the works.
The tub will be 58 inches wide, 40 inches long, and a total of 27 inches deep (from top edge to bottom). It's actual "available" space will be 11 inches deep (the remaining depth will form the side-skirting of the tub, between the wheels and the axle tubes). Within this, we'll be incorporating 5 x T-Iron cross members for strength and rigidity, and the insides of the tub will be clad in 6 x 6 inch broad wooden planks. The tub will have a 52 inch long, 12 inch diameter cylindrical petrol tank (with bullet-nosed ends, like a regular CNG cylinder). This should be good for well over 100 litres of fuel. To keep it looking nice and uncluttered, the fuel pump will be externally mounted (under the cabin of the car), and the outlet-inlet sleeve will be mounted at the underside of the tank. The car's batteries (two 70aH batteries, rather then one 100 aH) will be rear mounted in the tub (for weight, and to keep the engine bay clean and uncluttered). These batteries will be placed in two 8.5" x 24" x 12" metal boxes (obtained from a local scrapyard). The remaining space within the tub, will be occupied by the spare wheel (mounted at a raked, sloping angle).
The rear of the tub will feature an 11" x 58" tailgate, which I HOPE will carry "SLEIPNIR" embossed onto it. Side latches and hinges from a 70 series pickup will be used to fasten this tailgate to the tub. Finally, we'll be mounting the original FJ40 bumper (but rebuilt, reworked, and chrome-plated, with LED lights) in line with the bottom of the tub. Excess length of the frame (about 2 feet) will be chopped away. We're putting the construction of the rear mudguards / wheel arches on hold, for now. IF we decide to fabricate them, we MAY just cater for a set of much-narrower wheel arches for the front wheels, too. If just the tub looks good on its own, we won't build the wheel arches, at all.
All construction is going to be in 16 gauge sheet-metal. Hopefully, the side profile should be very dramatic looking indeed...with the chrome-plated fuel tank and chrome-plated battery boxes (which are a foot high each) playing peekaboo over the 11 inch tall tub. Let's see how this punga turns out, eventually!
