Timing belt Rubber vs Chain

I have a question on the type of timing belt. I went to buy an engine the person there showed me two engines and said one has rubber timing belt and other has chain timing belt. Now my question is what's the difference between rubber and chain timing belt and which one is better?

Well few engine have belt and few have chain

all new engine are coming along with timing chain and the old were on timing belts

so if you are getting any engine they wont be of same age

they almost last for ever..you dont need to change them....all they need lubrication like oil changes we do but they cost much ..if they start making noise

@belts

they need replacement at around 60k KM and r much cheaper and lighter then chain

Do remember..you cannot convert the belt to chain or vise verse

cant use "vs here, they both ok if rest of engine is ok, yu just change wornout part accordingly. engines arnt judged by timing belt or chain.

I personally dont like timing belts - they are a fiddle and pretty dangerous on an interference engine. Chains are good - and all good proven engine makers of the world use chains or gear train system.

Brother, please forgive my lack of knowledge, but I have also head that if belt breaks then engine is damaged. Could you be kind enough to explain the concept or reason behind it?

If you have a non interference engine nothing will be damaged and your car wont start. If you have a interference engine, pistons will hit and bend the valves,and you will have to take cylinder head off and replace valves,valve guides, head gasket and other parts in the way to take the head off.

timing chains also break,in due time if not changed,the "links" of the chains are bolted together by rivets,over time the rivets gets loose and give way for a link to break

timing belts break... have learnt the hard way after spending 11k on head and valve repairs
timing chains elongate a bit over a long period of use.. hence retarding the timing a little

they rarely do - chains last much longer than belts and belts sometime even a newer unabused belt will fall apart!
