To drive fast or slow when fuel is low?

yesterday i had an argument with my friend over this issue...

his take was that we need to drive slow when we are running out of fuel.. but i think otherwise..

he said he's read / watched a research on discovery channel proving that slow careful driving can lead you to next nearest gas station while driving fast can cause fuel tank to go empty before reaching the gas station... sound weird to me :S ...

what say u guys??..

dude somehow your friend is more logical then you . Actually fuel consumption doesnt depend upon driving fast or slow - it depends upon driving hard or soft. i mean car on 100 in 5th gear will consume less fuel than a car on 50 in second gear. so if you shift gears quick and keep your RMP low you will end up consuming less fuel.

i'd say you can drive at a higher speed as long as you accelerate slowly, shift gears very early and do not let your car cross 2000 rpm. drive at as low an rpm as you can. high speeds increase wind resistance and therefore your acceleration rate will decrease as you attain a higher speed. actually it is this wind resistance that increases fuel consumption at higher speeds as you will only attain a certain speed while maintaining say 2000 rpm and going beyond that particular speed will require you to increase the rpm which will subsequently increase the rate of fuel consumption.

alright.. that i knew.. but i thought in order to reach the nearest gas station i need to drive fast to get there... plus i also heard that driving fast saves fuel... but this High rev = High Consumption clears everything... thanks..

speed up with quick gear shifting and then put the gear in Neutral so the car will consume little fuel and you will cover distance.

in theory yes, it can be easily done while keeping rpm @ 2000; is a bit harder at lower rpm, though it is possible at even 1200 -1500 rpm if there is little to no wind/breeze and the road is smooth enough. actually i did achieved 60 in city traffic once while low on fuel and keeping below 2000 rpm, did not go faster as the traffic did not allow me.

In that case Diesel cars are very responsive. I used to start my pajero in second gear and then used to shift it to 5th at 40 km if fuel was low.

cg delux 125 gave average at 80 kmh 40 to 45km/liter and at 55 kmh it gives 53 to 55km/liter. thats the difference dirive slow and fast. same in cars

Although depandant on engine size most cars give best mileage between speeds of 80km/hr to 100km/hr .......but that has to be sustained speed i,e on highways ..

However if u try to drive fast but hit the breaks every 2 min u will waste more fuel like in city ....
