yes, FE has a lower viscosity mainly designed to save fuel and has less life.

TC has slightly higher viscosity and can take better beating than the FE.

plz elaborate on the base of their technical parameters that how much they are different from each other and for what types of transmission each of them is recommended for ?

Please also share that why Aisin's CFEx+ (CVT fluid) is fully recommended to use where Toyota's CVT-TC & CVT-FE both are recommended?

Grande is September 2016 modelCurrent ODO = 49,950 on 20-Nov-2020Last time CVT fluid changed in September 2018 after 2 years of usage at about 28,000 km

Current plan:After 2 years and about 22,000 km of usage - I am planning to change the CVT fluid again. This time I plan to open the pan to inspect the sludge (if any at the pan and clean the magnets).

During this process I will also observe the CVT transmission filter/strainer - if found dirty; the filter will also be changed.

Your plan to change the CVT fluid after 2 years and 22,000 km of usage, along with inspecting and cleaning the pan and magnets, is a thorough approach. Checking and potentially replacing the CVT transmission filter/strainer if it's dirty is also a wise precaution to maintain optimal performance.

I have not done one to one comparison of the transmission fluids, so really can't give any input at least for now. I can only say that both are very different, otherwise Toyota would have clearly stated using one over the other, which is not the case.

I'll suggest not to follow general recommendations of Aisin, rather would urge to follow the specific recommendations made by Toyota in its Owner's Manual, for your specific car. It's a fact, Toyota mostly owns Aisin, but, specific recommendations given in your car's Manual is the final verdict from Toyota itself.

Nowhere in the world Toyota mentions to change CVT fluid as periodic maintenance, in ANY owners manual.

I’m talking about countries where Toyota has direct and official presence, not like Pakistan where Indus has its own logic and was even recommending xw50 oils for Toyota engines that are running on 0w20 oils globally.

Cvt oil change is not a routine maintenance thing. Most dealerships in the US wouldn’t touch it until at least 60,000 to 100,000 miles that is more than 80,000 - 100,000km.

Then inspect at that point only then change the fluid if needed.

In Pakistan there is this misleading obsession created by some who know more than Toyotas own engineers that CVT fluid has to be changed early like 20,000 km to 40,000km.

Which is not recommended by Toyota’s owner manuals anywhere in the world like I said, where they operate officially and not through a third party like Indus.

Will it hurt to change the CVT oil early at mileage like 50k?

No it won’t, provided IF done properly. But then again Toyota Pakistan ie INDUS does not even change it according to official Toyota method .. just like they don’t stick to global Toyota policy where changing CVT fluid at specific KM is not mentioned in owners manual.

Well the difference with general properties is as follows

CVT-FE is good & recommended for the vehicles mostly came upto from 2000-2013/14.
For 2014 onwards, they recommend to use CVT-TC

for better understanding, generally TC is slightly thinner than FE. But good news is that its backward compatible.

For example if you have 2000-2013 model vehicle where FE is actually recommended, you can fairly use TC fluid there. No issue.

But on the other side you cannot use fluid FE where actually TC is recommended.

BTW, generally these transmission fluids are usually good upto 80K-100K km. But its good to replace them after 50-60K

Sir actually there is another situation because of which mechanics advise to change the CVT fluid after 20-25K.

To change the CVTF, they open the chamber bolt where only 40-50% oil comes out, and they top up with fresh oil in same quantity.
And hence they guide people kay poora tail nai nikla, lehaza 20K km kay baad jaldi change kerva lena. Waghera Waghera.

However, I guess the best way to replace the complete ATF is via ATF Cooler lines from Radiator, where we can replace old fluid with almost 100% new fluid.

And once its changed, its again good to travel for 50-60K.

Nah that method won’t work for CVT.

First, it’s not recommended nor advisable to change CVT fluid that soon, Toyota doesn’t recommend or ask for it.

If after, say 80k-100k km someone wants to do it, then follow the OEM method.

The amount that comes out can be measured and same poured back in, but depending on oil temperature at the time, there is also a need to level the fluid by bringing it to a specific temperature and then observing the overfill port.

I recently bought 11 Gen 2014 Altis 1.8 CVT with 105K KM on Odometer. Owner didn't have maintenance file but he confirmed that all oils were timely changed and done from good workshop in Defense. My first question is, what grade of engine oil should I use? Second, from where to get CVT transmission oil changed in Karachi?

Kindly suggest with full oil name and workshop or dealer
P.S. owner has moved abroad so cant contact him

Engine oil:

Any 5w30 fully synthetic engine oil with API SN or API-SP rating. Can also go for 0w20 grade if you want slightly better fuel economy.

Reputed oil brands available locally:

-Havoline 5w30 (my personal top choice)
-Shell HX7 PLUS 5w30 (only the PLUS, not simple HX7)
-Toyota genuine oil 0w20 API-SP (available locally from official dealerships, good price. NOT the one that comes in tin)
-Total Quartz 5w30

PSO oil is also available but I have no reason to go for it when international reputed giants are available at similar price like Havoline, Shell and official Toyota.

As for CVT oil change, if it’s been done in the past then no need that soon.
If you want to do for personal satisfaction I don’t know who does it right in your city.

CVT oil is due as I got car inspection done from a workshop. I will wait for other Karachiette to guide. Thank you for engine oil suggestions.

Well the points are mixing many things without knowing the complete details.

Please read AISIN recommendation. BTW K313 is manufactured by AISIN. And Toyota owns it.

The cost of replacement these days of used K313 is around Rs 300k to 400k. Better change fluid early than changing transmission.

BTW if someone dies not want to change the CVT fluid its totally up to them. Cheers!

BTW can you please share "technical" specs with engineering units rather that one is thick and other is thin. I wish things were that simple!

THE MOST EASY what Toyota recommends is Three-Drain-Three-Refills.

The last part is wrong, OEM DOES DEMANDS PROPER TEMPERATURE I.e 35C to 45C.
