Reverse Gear of my car doesn't engage initially but after I press accelerator increasing the RPM upto 3500 it start moving slowly and after a little while the gear engages and the car starts reversing satisfactorily. I showed it to my mechanic and he says that the gears have warred off which I am finding hard to believe because if that was the case the gear wouldn't engage at all. Any ideas what could be the problem and how to get it fixed.
Which model car is this latest or old?
it is old 1994 corolla (Indus) Japanese assembled.
Once engaged, when stopped, put in neutral and put again in reverse, does it work properly or the same procedure starts again?
No it doesn't. It only engages after giving high rpm at reverse gear. Sorry for the late reply though, kinda busy with my house renovation. I showed it to my mechanic and he removed the bottom cover, cleaned the strainer and found some very small metal particles settled at the bottom. He cleaned everything and fitted back. it worked for two days properly and now again same problem. Now he says you have to get the whole gear box changed. What do you think?
Sorry didn't read your comment correctly. Once engaged, after putting it on neutral and again on reverse it works but after stopping for long time same procedure.
If there were metal particles there, that would probably mean something is broken. If its not very annoying, keep using it, if it is, open the gearbox and check its physical condition, it might be repairable. If not, then change it
immediately change the transmission oil with Toyota ATF. change or clean the transmission oil filter as well.
