Ambient temperature should be a concern in an air cooled engine like beetle but why we are still hovering around it when the cars of today are liquid cooled with very well designed cooling systems where even there is a small ecu installed to control the rad fan in corolla.With such systems I wonder why we are still advocating 50 grade oils.

Not everything is cooled via radiator. Oil is also very critical. Somehow 5w-30 is the most versatile and recommended grade in almost every new cars even under heavy load

I agree, SN 5w30 is safe bet for these engines. Unfortunately Toyota dealership only offer Semi-Syn 5w30 or SN 5w50. Otherwise I always used Total Quartz 9000 SN 5w30 in most of my cars.

Havoline proDS is the best 5w-30. 160 plus VI and 8.5 TBN. Excellent value for money

Agreed. I shifted from total to havoline when they made available this 5w30 and never looked back. Just make sure to get from a trusted source.

Daraz official store is most trusted one. Havoline is bery underrated. Its VI and TBN is way higher than competition but people just want to spend on expensive fancy oils

My 4k driven car has developed this strange phenomenon. The car smells fresh and pleasant when I switch it on but If I turn on the fan without the AC, the air has bad bad odor of sweat. As soon as I turn on the AC everything gets fine. What could be the possible reason for this and what should be the best remedy? No, I don't smell of sweat in case you're wondering

It is due to mold
Lysol spray
Turn off recirculation mode
Remove cabin filter and turn on fan on full blast
Now spray lysol on the vent near the wipers
The smell will go away

To prevent this in future always turn off ac about a kilometer or two before your destination and switch the fan to max. It will dry out the evaporater. If ur area is not dusty turn off recirculation mode for more better results every time you swtich off ac.

My 2 cents on oil. When exactly did Toyota start offering 5w-50? I have a 2012 Altis 1.6. it's the same engine that's coming in today's Altis. Back in 2012 I don't think 5w-50 was available. Question. Why does IMC keep revising it's recommendations for the same engine overtime?

I have used Total 0w-20 in Grande for 10,000 kms and it runs so very good and light on it.

There is a misconception in Pakistan that ow-20 grade is only for hybrid engines.

In US 0w-20 is used more to cater to environmental regulations as it gives slightly better fuel economy.

For the last 5,000 kms I have used Total 0w-40.

But the best fuel economy I have got was with Taglon 5w-50.

In Pakistan IMC may be pushing for 5w-50 purely for profit as 0w-20 is a bit expensive than other grades available.

Anyways, the crux is that all these oils run good in 2zr-fe corollas. People using 5w-30 are also happy.

I personally feel the mileage figures came down with 5w30.
Yet the engine noise was less as well.

Usa has cafe standards. Australian manual says 5-30 onward
