As @autophile bhae has said, no issue in using any of the two oils i.e 5w30 or 5w50. I only use 5w50 cuz Taglon comes inboth 4 and 1 ltr packing so one can easily pour 4.2 ltrs.
Quality of both oils is great and both multi-grades are good for ambient temperature ranges (-5 to 50 degree C) of Punjab through out the year.
By quieter engine you mean quieter at the startup or at engine operating temp or both?
I would just try to explain for my fellow PakWheelers, in easy terms, what multi-grade oils do and what these figures 5w30 or 5w50 mean.
Engine's Requirement from Oil:
Engine at ambient temperatures (cold to hot) needs a thinner oil to immediately and easily lubricate the engine at startup.
When engine is operating and hot it needs an adequately thicker oil for lubrication plus sealing the combustion pressure generated in the engine's cylinders.
Then another requirement, engines may have to startup at different ambient temperatures throughout the year like between -20 to 50 degrees C,and for these temperature ranges the engine oil should maintain the same good thinness to ensure easy startup and kick in quick lubrication.
To sum up, engine needs a magical lubricant or a fluid that remains thinner at ambient temperatures , from cold to hot, and gets a bit thicker on high engine operating temperatures.
Problem with Lubricants or Fluids:
I say that engine's requirement is a magical fluid or lubricant because fluids normally behave other way round, they get thicker and thicker as the temperature lowers (so no lubrication for engine startup) and thinner and thinner as the temperature heightens (water like lubricant, O Gosh). Like, if you take out a honey bottle nowadays and make the honey flow it will go sluggish as it'll be thick. But if you heat it, it will get thin and flow fast.
Multi-Grade Oils do the Magic:
Multi Grade oils solve this issue by magically retaining their thinness at ambient temperature ranges (cold to hot) for easy engine startup and quick lubrication. Then as the engine temperature rises, instead of further thinning they thicken to a level which is best for lubricating as well as sealing the engine.
What Does the Figures Mean:
5w means thickness that the oil will maintain at ambient temperature range (cold to hot) and 30 or 50, after w, means thickness that oil will maintain at engine operating temperature. Lesser the number value, lesser will be the thickness. 5W means that oil will be thinner and will maintain its thinness generally till -25C. Check out this ambient temperature thickness/ flow test of five different multi-grade oils to have a better idea
30 or 50 signify that oil will be relatively thicker and maintain that desired thickness at engine's operating temperature. 50 will be thicker than 30 and will provide better sealing and lubrication if engine is under higher load conditions.
Conclusion:
For our cars which operate under normal load conditions we just need to check the car owner's manual and get the recommended multi-grade and quality oil. No need to worry much, as we are not running for NASCAR Cup.
