The Total Quartz 9000 series are all fully synthetic engine oils. "Fully Synthetic" or "100% Synthetic" nomenclature varies with each manufacturer and region the product is being sold. Some companies use the term "100% synthetic" only for Group IV or higher base stock oil and use the term "Fully synthetic" for group III base stock oils.
Total puts both it's group 3 and group 4 base stock oils in the Quartz 9000 series. The Quartz 9000 Future Series 5W-30 and 0W-20 are both group 3 base stocks. Similarly, the Quartz 9000 Energy Series 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40 are group IV base stock based oils.
Group 3 base stock is hydrocracked crude and group 4 is Polyalfaolefin (PAO) - which is a completely lab made chemical hence, a fully synthetic in perhaps a more truer sense. Group V base oils are also fully synthetics that do not fall in either of group 1 to 4 categories for eg. esters, polyglycols and silicone
However, an engine oil performance is not all about what base stock it has. The final formulation is base oil and additive pack working in tandem. A group 3 based engine oil with a more stout add pack can offer better engine protection and detergency than a group 4. Therefore, it's always better to look at the overall formulation and the approval ratings when buying an engine oil.
ILSAC GF-1 to 5 on the other hand are oil specification standards that define the minimum parameters for an oil to meet the ILSAC certification. Much like the API, ACEA, JASO, ASTM oil standardization bodies. And in no way an ILSAC-GF classification is an indication of the base stock of engine oil. You can easily find both group III and group IV base stock oils that meet the ILSAC GF-5 standard.
Also, they have introduced API SP and ILSAC GF-6A standards and we may start seeing them by the end of this year or the next.
