I bought corolla Gli 2006 petrol engine about 6 months ago. It was in very rough condition. I maintained it mechanically. But still i get 10 to 11 km/ ltr fuel average. The car also needs body work denting as well as painting too approximately 2 lacs will be needed to make it in perfect condition.
I am not satisfied with fuel average. Also body work is needed. is it a good option to go for denting painting and investing another two lacs or should sell the car and buy another one.??? Also suggest about fuel average. Please corolla 2002-2008 lovers your expert opinion needed

fuel average is okayish for this old engine, i don't think it can give 13-14 kmpl in city

if you have enough money to sell it and buy a car that is in way way better condition, then go for it..

otherwise, you've already spent money to maintain it mechanically.. now only body work is required so spend more money on it and get it in your desired condition.

Thank you a better suggestion indeed. Fuel average is ok for city but on highway/long journey it is a bit low. Some people suggested to install irridium spark plugs. Do you have any info about that?...
Due to budget i am not in position to sell it and buy a good condition car. As per my experience,on even a brand new car 1 lac expense is must to make as your travel companion. So I'll go for denting painting. Hope to in 1-2 lac it will be in perfect shape.

irridium or any other facny spark plg hardly make any difference on the fuel consumption, however the precious metal spark plugs have long life.

on highway, driving at top gear, the car will return u like 15km/l with speeds 100/110 kph.

which engine oil are u using? i hope its not 20w-50.

try switching to Original Air filter (OEM), its expensive as compared to guard etc but justifies as it will go on till 10k KMS.

is the car having bigger and fatter tyres as comapred to stock size? fancy chinese rims etc?

do u feel the brakes jamming etc?

On highway i get 10-11 ltr/km, with a speed of 80 to 90 kmph. I am using a bit fatter tyre 65/R15/195. There was feel of jamming previously. I changed wheel bearings now its ok. On tyre size, mechanic said not to go for original size just because of fuel avg as it will not contribute much to fuel avg but also compromise the grip and drive experience. Guide me for engine oil i will change in 1,2 days. Also guide for brand. also for OEM . Thanks in advance

10/11 KM per liter on highway is not ok, i hope u r in top gear which is 5th. can u share the RPM at this speed?

195/65/15 is not that bad, Xli/Gli used to come with 13 inh rims stock. how abt rims?

so u r sure that brakes are not dragging and bearing are good, the rims are not getting super hot when u drive a bit.

which is current oil grade in use? if its 20w-50 then 10w-40 wont hurt, later u can try even thinner oils.

did u replace the gear oil?

u can get OEM air filter from ur trusted shop else order online

On top 5th gear i use to drive at 80 to 100 kmph RPM is about 2800 to 3200. Rims are alloy rims aftermarket. Brakes are ok. Previously there was issue of bearings. Tyres were old are need replacement therefore i couldn't recognise the issue at that time. After i changed tyres then bearing work was done. Now car feels a bit light. I bought it about 7 months ago. I changed all fluids brake, gear etc also fuel pump was changed. Previously car was hardly giving 4-5 kmpl average in city. No i made it at 10-11 at long journeys and 9 in city. Actually due to nature of my job i have to travel almost 200 km every week in single journey. I thought for swapping my car with city IDSI but i am from Dg khan and road conditions are very rough therefore Gli is a tough car to bear these bumpy roads. my mechanic and electrician are recommending me for irridium sparkplugs. You are sincere thoughts and experience are very useful. Thanks

fuel pump was changed

Which fuel pump was installed and did you change the fuel filter? Also, how is the acceleration of the car

1300cc shud be 3.5k RPM on 120kph, seems like the RPM on higher side.

I have 2007 GLi with around 272K on the odo.

Around 15 days ago, It returned me fuel average of 15.14 Km/L from LHR to FSD via GT Road.
I filled the tank at auto-stop, drove LHR-FSD-LHR and the total distance covered was around 240 Kms. The fuel needle was at the 1st quarter. Then the next day I filled again on auto-stop and 15.85 Liters of fuel was poured in. So roughly the average calculates to be around 15.14.

I maintained the RPMs at 2400-2450 and the speed was slightly under 80kmph (around 75-78).

Keeping in mind:
(1) engine oil change was due (it was driven 5200 Km on old engine oil)
(2) Tune-up was done in March-2023 (at 259K km). Tune-up included the replacement of spark plugs, cleaning of throttle body, intake manifold, fuel filter, IACV and all other sensors etc.

So after almost a year and 13K kms, with engine oil/filters that completed their life the average seems pretty decent.

Please also note that for better fuel average on long routes, the key point is to maintain the RPMs.
For example, the way my father drives is he cruises on 80 in 3rd or 4th gear, which means the RPMs touching around 4200-3700. I change the gears quickly and under 2000 RPMs specially in city/local driving.

Lastly, good fuel is also a key factor in returning good fuel average.

Amazing. Your car is a gem. It seems you have this car since long. Yesterday i did oil change and got clean my sparkplugs. Fuel avg increases a bit it gave avg of about 13.5 kmpl

Alhamdulillah Bought it from the first owner in Jan-2022.

Which brand & grade of engine oil did you pour in?

I use Havoline 10w-40 API-SL grade and the change interval is roughly around 5000-5300 Kms.

Also, I use twin-tip spark plugs i.e. Denso K16TT, while the stock single tip ones are Denso K16RU-11.
Twin-tip plugs create better spark thus slightly better acceleration & fuel average.

I poured total 20w-50 engine oil and changed at 4500 km. NGK spark plugs are installed
