Toyota Estima Lucida Timing belt change

Its been a year that we bought this minivan and were not sure if odometer is showing genuine mileage (problem with grey imports). To get peace of mind and be sure that it doesnt give up on me suddenly and hand over a heft overhaul bill. we opened it up for a timing belt change, which is a task in its own since the engine is mounted sideways under the front seats. It has turbo and an intercooler as well bringing in lot of piping going here and there.

Started off by taking the seats out. Taking off the carpet and engine covers.

I always wondered looking at the engine bay how one can adjust valve clearance on this thing and look around the internet to find a very good community of Estima Owners www.Estimaowners.com which is a UK based site having almost all info you need to maintain Estimas. There i found tutorials and threads explaining various maintenance procedures.

We got to see the engine valve cover finally after 2 hours

Check the intake pipings bring air in and out of turbo, then the intercooler and finally the engine.

Diesels do not require a throttle plate for normal working but EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) makes it necessary to have a throttle plate on intake along with TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). It was a little gunky because of EGR so we blanked it from both ends, Exhaust and Intake.

Finally the covers and belt were out after taking off the front shaft driving all the auxiliaries. This is an estima specific system due to placement of engine in middle.

It was not as bad as we expected it to be. Everything was clean and tidy. Piping, clippings, eletricals. Everything was in place neat and clean. Big relief after so much effort just to reach the timing belt

Went to buy parts. We intended to change the following parts

• Timing belt
• Timing bearings
• V belts
• Front disc pads

Timing belt was easily available, original from Toyota costed 2900. One of the timing bearings is again estima exclusive with a collar on sides to hold the belt in place. That one has to be ordered and delivery time was 7 days. So we had to out back the old ones which were not in a bad shape. I intend to open it up agian after 50k kms making al parts available before hand because of the bearings not being changed this time.

V Belts were also a pain to find. But got them from a specialist belt vendor at Baboo Mohallah, Pindi.

It was dark till the time we got back after parts purchase.

Chota did the washing part while we were away. A can of WD-40 was all it took along with some kerosene oil

After this i was too busy to take pictures. We did valve clearance adjustments, a coolant change, disc pads cahnge and V belt change.

Next on list are cleaning the fins on condensor, radiator and intercooler. Have to take front bumper off for that.

It is purring like a charm now after EGR blanking. Who cares about emissions anyway

It was a job well done and you have to be half mechanic yourself to maintain these beauties Being on pakwheels and participating in technical threads make you learn so much that a mechanic with bad intentions cannot dodge you into bad repairs.

Thank God our mechanic is a very well trusted one and he knows what he do and how to do it. He doesnt mind taking advices from us and giving them as well, which makes it very comfortable to work along.

A few suggestions:

This is a good time to inspect all the seals at the front of the engine and the water pump too, since any leak will cause much more trouble if not stopped.

On some models, a new timing belt tensioner is recommended with a new belt.

If maintained and driven with care, Lucida/Estima/Previa models are very durable vehicles, and it looks like you will enjoy this one for a long time!

That sounds great. After all, you plan is to open it again in about 30k miles, and that is just a short drive around the block for these engines.
