As far as the locking is concerned, I saw this feature for the first time in a Vitz. The theory that the owner gave me was that, as far as the key is with you, as in, in your pocket, and you come near the car, and you open the door, it will unlock and the door will open. As the key comes within the desired or specified range. If the key isn't with you, it will not open. The car also had an ignition button. So basically the key wasn't even required to start the car. Perhaps the Cruiser guy wasn't doing anything with the phone to unlock his car. Or may be it could be some finger swiping system like you see in laptops to log on. Its getting common now a days.
As far as the steering going in is concerned; I saw it for the first time in my cousin's Amazon. He said you can set up to 5 profiles depending on the steering, seating and mirror positions. When any user comes, he can select his profile and these things would be adjusted automatically according to that person. That was cool, but its also an old technology now.
