Toyota Passo 2005 CVT OR ATF

Hi All,

Please advice, is passo 05 model CVT or ATF? There is nothing written on the dip stick.

My mechanic told me its CVT but I doubt its ATF as the car has jerks while shifting. I recently changed the transmission oil to KIXX ATF. BTW, car is giving massive jerks on shifting and sometimes shift from 1-3 by skipping 2 gear.

Please advice.

I think not a good choice for judging that car has AT, as its giving jerks. Based on my limited knowledge, jerks can be experienced in these both types of transmissions, and if you'll pour wrong transmission oil, then issues can aggravate.

I have checked, and have found that Toyota Passo used to come with 4 Speed Forward Automatic transmission 4AT, from its origin, i.e. December 2004, till December 2009, or January 2010. After February 2010, CVT was introduced instead of AT.

So, it can mean that your 2005 model year Passo is equipped with 4AT.

If oil was authentic and meeting OEM requirements, and there was not anything physically wrong with the transmission, and it was working absolutely fine previously, then I fear mechanic has messed up something while changing ATF.

But the only question of atf / CVT is still making me confused as my mechanic put scanner and he tune the gearbox. While doing that he said its CVT.

Dear if your vehicle already had problems, especially in the transmission, then why did you buy it at the 1st place?

Is the mechanic 100% sure that your 2005 model Passo is equipped with CVT? (whereas based on my knowledge, no JDM Passo came with CVT from the factory in 2005. CVT got introduced in Passo, somewhere in 2010)

Like I have said mentioned above, your vehicle seems to be equipped with AT. If you'll follow and use steps for CVT, your transmission may be further ruined.

Please share some pics of the transmission from sides, above and below; if possible and convenient, and also of the gear lever.

Hey bro- its AT. Got the confirmation from other multiple sources. However, transmission seem to be okay the issue lies with the engine as it is not maintaining the conpression.

Good to know that the type of transmission has been confirmed.

Regarding engine's health, 1st have the compression test done to know about its exact condition. If its weak, then rebuild / overhaul may be the only solution.

Btw, do you observe any oil consumption issues? Or Bluish Smoke from the exhaust? Which may be continuous too?

Post pic of car chassis plate, transmission model is written on it to identify type, whether cvt or atf. Also the gear lever marking can help to identify type of transmission

Yes basit. The compression test is done. Its below 150 around 125 and the there was a massive smoke while giving throttle.

Is the engine stock? and 1KR-FE 1000 cc or K3-VE 1300 cc?

But Dear why you didn't opt for rebuild / overhaul?

I think, rebuild / overhaul of 1000 cc 1KR-FE engine is easy, as relevant parts are available in automotive markets in brand new conditions.

Just a competent mechanic / good garage is reqd., which can rebuild / overhaul the engine as per stock, factory conditions and OEM specs.

Also, now a days mechanics are lazy as fixing the assembly seems to be easy for them.

In assembly change from scrap/kachraa you are playing roulette, you have no information of the state of the engine, it maybe 50% dead already, it maybe a pile of trash, it maybe 70% good (brand new dont exist in scrap)

Any implied “checking grantee” is met with “20 saal tajurba” and “ye aise he hota hai”

That is besides the fact of the breakage of small clips and pieces that mechanics will break because of either brittle from age or just not giving a damn.
