Toyota Passo 2012 (52K driven) is decreasing Engine Oil

Hi Everyone,

I am too much frustrated by my Passo. It is only 52K driven and usage is once a week( within city). I had been using ZIC 5w20 but it was giving bad mileage and not a proper pick. I was worried about the rumours that ZIC is being manufatured locally now. So, this time I shifted to Totachi 5w30 which is very expensive as compared to ZIC. The official retailer recommended me to change the oil after 5-6K kms. But, something worst happened. I checked the dipstick after 1500 kms and the oil was reduced by quarter. Fortunately, I bought 4L, I poured the quarter in it. After 3000 km, it is again decreased by quarter. I don't know why engine is decreasing this new oil. There is no leakage at all, tuning is properly maintained, mechanic even says that there is no fault in car. He recommended me to shift back to ZIC or pour 10w40 but why? Passo's manual already says to pour 5w30. This oil gave me very good mileage on highways (ISB-Peshawar round trip in 17 litres of petrol) but in city, the same petrol tank gets finished within 380-400 kms.
Kindly suggest me what to do. Should I change my oil brand, grade or continue to pour this as someone said that Car will take time to get settled with this new oil.

It's better to switch to 10w40 because it is thick/viscous oil compared to 5w30 and using that will solve the problem of oil reduction.
According to the information that you provided, it looks like that the engine of your Passo is weakening.

The rest is your choice.

There is nothing wrong with ZIC A+ 5w-20, as far as engine oil brand and grade is concerned. Saying it based on my personal experience of using it in Vitz and Passo both.

If pick was improper, with bad mileage, then there was something wrong with the car, or engine oil, or both.

Engine oil might be fake, and car may be requiring full tune up.

Does not matter and no harm in it, as long as oil is authentic.

Caltex / Havoline also have blending plants here, and their oils are great (again, as long as they are original, and not fake, counterfeit, etc.). So it cannot be said that if some company has blending parts here in Pakistan, then their oils will be substandard.

They'll have the same criteria throughout the world.

1KRFE has known issue of oil consumption, Unless its burning half of engine oil on every change you have to live with it. Even according to this engine manual 600-700 ml/16000 km is normal. Better use 5w30 or 10w40 from reputed brands.

Let me mention some finest engine oil brands in 5w-30 oil grade (for Gasoline engines), and easily available locally here, at reasonable prices:

1. Caltex / Havoline 5w-30 fully synthetic
2. Total 5w-30 fully synthetic
3. Shell 5w-30 fully synthetic and semi synthetic
4. KIXX 5w-30 fully synthetic
5. PSO Cariant 5w-30 fully synthetic (thickest in these all 05, if I am correct)

ENEOS Sustina 5w-30 fully synthetic can also available from selected Attock fuel stations, but is expensive.

So next time, when you are in market for 5w-30, prefer to go for 1st 03 brands which I have mentioned above, and fully synthetic. Then, last 02 can be the options.

Before going for any oil / brand, ensure that oil is 100% original and authentic, and not fake, counterfeit, etc.

I think no harm in it and no need to worry about, as long as engine health is great!

Some engine oil consumption is normal, and even some OEMs mention in the manuals that engine oil consumption can be as high as 1L per 1,000 kms.

5w-20 by ZIC A+, or Shell , etc. would also be fine, but I suggest 5w-30.

If you are too much worried, then from next oil change, you may try ZIC 10w-40 fully synthetic.

Just ensure oil is authentic, and change oil + oil filter after every 5,000 Kms / 06 months, whichever comes 1st.

I would suggest to change brands, if sticking with 5w-30 (details mentioned above), or if too much worried about oil consumption, then fully synthetic 10w-40 by ZIC from next oil change.

As long as oil is touching the max. point on dipstick (and not going above it), or stays in-between the max. and min. marks on dipstick, or does not go below the min. mark on dipstick, all is fine and well.

If oil level drops in-between, simply top-it up.

Check your air filter or get the tyre pressure checked every week. If car is mostly parked then tyres deflate faster maybe thats why average is decreasing in city.
I have vitz 2015/19 64k driven which i bought recently and poured in shell 5w20. Oil was reduced around 300ml after 1000kms which i poured up and after almost 2000kms more oil level is same alhamdulillah. Average is 15/16 km/l in karachi city with ac very light foot.
imo get your engine's compression test done to check its health then choose the appropriate grade

and remember short trips always kill average. first trip of the day should be atleast 5kms if you want the best average

Well i have a 90k driven passo, no oil consumption on 0w20. In your passo, probably the odo is reversed. I highly doubt a 2012 model with only 50k

There is nothing such as car taking time fo settle on new brand of oil. The first thing u shud do is drain the oil and get a reputed brand oil. Totachi, mitasu pitasu are all no name russian companies trying to cash on the word japanese. Nowhere in japan tbis brand of oil is to br found. Pour in 5w30 of aisin or shell, and see if it still consumes oil. Also chk if there is any leakage. Also inspect the plug oil seal on the valve cover. For this, u can remove the plugs and see if they are soaked in oil
