Toyota Passo 2015 - P2118 engine error code (Throttle Actuator Control Motor Current Range)

Hi all,

I own a self imported Toyota Passo 2015 (KGC30) currently at 27,000 KM's. Recently the CEL illuminated and upon diagnosis it translated to error code P2118. A quick summary and action that I've taken so far is as following:

1) The very first time this happened, the CEL illuminated and power to the throttle was completely cut. Turning the car on and off a few times resulted in power restoration till the next time the car was shut off. Initially I checked all fuses in the engine bay per a quick google and found all of them intact.

2) Took car to Toyota South here in Karachi. They were clueless and just did a basis wiring check and serviced throttle body / cleared codes. Car ended up working fine for 5 days and then resorted back to it's initial symptoms.

3) Initially the symptoms was intermittent but have worsened as time has progressed. The car is unable to move and the engine shakes at idle as well upon start before it is able to normalize. Have checked the battery / terminals / load tested but it is perfectly fine.

I spoke to a re-known shop here in Karachi who gave a final verdict of ECU change without even looking at the car.

Any advise on next steps - things I should look at? I'm currently in the process of ordering a wiring diagram from Japan so that at least a proper diagnosis can take place (if someone already has this, please reach out). Extremely hesitant taking my car to rookie mechanics who may end up ruining it further.

Well it seems to be throttle plate is sticking the best option to repair this fault is to replace the throttle body only.
But another direction of repairs guides us toward the previous history of involvement in any accidents or damage to the ecm if not then the first thing is to replace the throttle body only not the whole ECM

Thanks Hashim bhai. I'm arranging a diagnostics tool to run an analysis on the throttle body readings.

Issue happened one fine day, no battery replacement, original JDM battery is in perfect health.

Thank you. The car did behave normally for 5 days after throttle service so I'm inclined towards this option as well. I have received a 1KR repair manual and will be testing the throttle performance metrics (screen shot attached) / arranging a diagnostics tool to do so.

No accident or flood damage history, this car is a genuine 4.5 grade self imported vehicle from Japan driven by me exclusively.

did you check the grounds contacts terminals ??

after that do this ohm meter check of TB as well as pedal

wiring could also be checked via DMM .

if you are doing it as DIY its will be good .

Toyota Clifton were foolish to service/ghusal-e-mayat thrattal baady(still living in 80's 90's era)

get hold of repair manual and check where it says to clean TB like they did...they never want....and will even mess it up more ... can create air leaks too messing up your fuel trims too

Just got hold of a OBD scan tool, will be running a thorough DIY check over the weekend including wiring check. I do not have an OHM meter so might need to call an electrician or borrow it from someone to get this done.

I will re-check the grounds as battery wala only checked the battery terminals (yes they still had original chay dee em grease )

purchase digital multi-meter from daraz or any electronic shop....it wont cost much and is a must in your diagnosis..

Quick updates here. Using multimeter at this time seems wiring is intact, no foul play / rodent damage visible. Grounding terminals physically look good.

Using OBD tool, accelerator pedal has been determined to be fully functional. Cleared pending codes and CEL is off for now.

Course of action now is to drive the car and pull 'freeze frames' data from the OBD tool next time the CEL illuminates.

good...you can also now physically make wiring jiggle from diff places after starting car and see if CEL goes on....to see if theres any loose wiring/joint inside

also check the TB resistance

We checked the TB resistance @Ghuncha has the exact details but we couldn't verify the readings as we did not have the stock readings to tally this against.

Replace the throttle body it's not closing fully at self check so the error keeps coming back.

Throttle pedal replacement

Tested the throttle pedal per readings from the diagnostics tool and it is behaving / responding normally. Compared these to another passo and the readings were in- line.
