I plan to buy a toyota surf and inspected one model 1997. The body of vehicle is good but its engine is 50% (original diesel). Can anyone guide me how much will it cost me for replacing the petrol 2700cc engine in it? Plus do I need to change the transmission with that as well?

Also how much it will cost me if I get the current engine overhauled?

Plus not sure about the suspension of the car yet as still have to get it thoroughly inspected. But just in case I have to get the suspension work done how much will that be? (I am totally new to SUVs so have no idea of the repairing/maintenance cost)

Brother if you're getting on bargain only then go for such SUV, maintaining such condition vehicles will required a lot of pain.
I assume the diesel engine is 1kz, i'm not sure the current condition of engine but i will suggest you to stay with the current engine or at-least DONOT go for 2.7L 3RZ since it a under powered on certain terrains.
Mind sharing the pics and price if possible for better idea.

Thanks for reply. Actually someone told me about that surf. That guy inspected it. According to him engine is 50% but body is good. The demand is around 1.5million. I have asked him to show me the vehicle as well. Just wanted to know before hand if we had to make a deal what should be the price (keeping in mind the cost of maintenance required)

Any idea how much it costs to get the diesel engine overhauled?

I myself was looking for this 96-97 Surf, I find it a beautiful SUV in this price bracket 96 And 97 Surf also comes with 1kz originally.

I'd suggest for a diesel one.

The demand sounds ok if the vehicle is an imported one.
Cost of engine overhaul would be 35-45 thousand approximately.
Suspension may take 10k or 50k even depending upon the work needed

1997 Surf ? 1.5 Mil ? when was it imported and which year it is registered? - besides the asking price

keep in mind a figure of approx. 100,000 for suspension & engine overhaul with 70% oem japanese parts. Fine tuned diesel pump to run silent smooth & fuel economy is KEY.

Another option is a 93-94 surf. Its actually a body change on toyota double cabin. And the guy says he has court orders for the body change and they have paid the luxury tax on that as well. Is that a safe bet?

Can anyone tell me what things to check for while inspecting 4x4s? How to check for body change? How to know if its an auction car (is it mentioned on the book or online registration verification site)?

I have never purchased a 4x4 so have no idea and someone mentioned that never go for auctioned car (get imported one). So whats wrong with the auctioned ones?

Yes you can usually check if it is a customs auction car from the online registration verification website. I recently did that for a 1995 Surf that I had been eyeing and it is clearly mentioned on the data when you put in the registration details.

I also want to know the answer to your question - what is the reason for staying away from auctioned vehicles? From the responses on these forums I have gathered that (a) auctioned vehicles are sold for much higher prices as compared to market and (b) auctioned vehicles are targets for duplicate/multiple papers being made. I don't understand this second point. Once an auctioned vehicle is bought and registered by the new owner and the vehicle comes into his possession, what does someone else seek to gain by having duplicate papers for that same vehicle made?
