Toyota Vitz (2000) Regged 2008 Transmission and Front Disc Brakes Query

Let me share my experience:

Last year when I bought Passo X, 2013 model, I also had its transmission fully serviced (transmission filter cleaned, oil replaced, etc.) during its first comprehensive preventive / pro-active maintenance. Oil was looking fine, may be there was no need for its replacement even told by mechanic, but I replaced it. Odo reading was about ~23-24k, still I replaced it. Oil was replaced with Toyota Genuine CVTF and AL HAM DU LILLAH, I have never faced any issues since then. I have been driving my car for more than a year and Engine, transmission, etc. everything is working flawlessly with superb fuel efficiency MA SHA ALLAH.

If my car's transmission is relatively new and your car's is old (no offense and disrespect), but let's take another example / perspective: When engines start getting older, do we stop replacing engine oils along with filters in them, and keep on using the same old oil for the rest of their life?

I think not. And same is true for transmission or any moving parts assembly, which require oil for lubrication.

No doubt, Transmission has different schematics, design and design philosophy than engine, its oil viscosity, grade (75w90 Vs 0w20), service life is different (may be 40-60,000 kms for a transmission oil VS 3,000-6,000 kms for an engine oil), but at the end, it's and oil, and like every oil, it needs replacement when it completes its service life, etc. It can not run forever.

Absolutely. I was also quite surprised when I was told that there is a risk. Even though, the part # of the oil needed for the transmission for my car is clearly written on the dipstick used to check the transmission oil level.

I didn't push the issue as I was in Abbottabad, and I just wanted to get the car to Lahore.

I plan to take it to a good service center in Lahore and I will speak with them. Absolutely the transmission oil needs to be changed immediately, and it is top of my list of priorities.

I also have another issue with the car I need to resolve urgently. The front disc brakes system.

When I was getting the brakes serviced, the junior mechanics told me that your disc pads are finished. You need to replace them. When I said OK, the senior mechanic came and looked at the situation and told me not to get them changed until I get the ROUTER or ROOTER changed. I am unsure of the spelling.

The reason for this is that the old Rooter/Router would have ruined my new brake pads so I need to get them done together.

Can anyone give me more information and pricing information regarding ROUTER/ROOTER and the front disc brake pads for Vitz?

He may be talking about the brake rotors (these are disc shaped structures, and in case of discs brakes system, brake pads hold them tightly, when you apply brakes. You may Google for more details).

In short, first try to have your brakes fully serviced from a reputed garage. Mechanic will look at brake rotors, brake pads, brake shoes, brake drums, etc. and should first try to service them via sand paper. If it will not work, then brake rotors may require "disc turning", commonly know as "Tool lagana". If it still won't work, then last option would be to replace them.

I don't know prices of brake rotors, but I am hopeful that they are not that costly and "Kabli" ones should be available in market at reasonable price. Similarly, Brake pads (especially front ones) should be replaced, and they are also easily available in market for Vitz.

For brake pads, only go for genuine, OEM ones, made in Japan (instead of Korean, Chinese, etc.) Do not risk on safety.

In Lahore, you can get Kabli Brake Rotors (and if lucky, may be almost new / very slightly used) for Vitz, very easily from Bilal Gunj. Just visit the market and survey, and buy from the shop which gives the most competitive rate. Remember, there is no rate fixed for "Kabli" parts. Any shopkeeper can demand as much price as he may desire. But regarding brake pads, buy them absolutely brand new. They are easily available.

You're right, he was talking about the rotors. As for the front disc brake pads, the price I was quoted at the Toyota motors service center was approximately 10,000 rupees for the set (for both front wheels).

As for the rotors, am I not better off getting those genuine from the Toyota motors service center as well? They both rely on each other to operate and it seems to me that both are a crucial to the safe operation of the vehicle.

As for the price of the rotors, I have no idea. As for Kabli parts, I am just not car mechanics savvy enough to trust myself to pick up good quality very slightly used rotors for my car.

Also note that the car brakes (front and back) was serviced at the Toyota authorized Service center and they did not take the rotors out and service them or sand them off in anyway.

I searched for front wheel disc brake pads, and the prices I see are very different from the price I was quoted at the Toyota Service Center.

Obviously the parts provided by Toyota service center are genuine, but are they actually made in Japan parts?

Also, if you wanted to buy new brake pads, where would you recommend I buy these parts?

Hi guys,

I really need some information about my brake problem.

When I got the car serviced, the toyoto service centre mechanic told me both the front wheel rotors and the front wheel disc pads need replacement.

However, that makes the whole thing extremely costly, and I have read on this form that you can get the Rotors TOOLED, and get new brake pads from the market for much less.

Can someone please help me with the following questions.

a) If I get the Rotors tooled, how will I personally check that they have done a good job? I am assuming that if the rotors are not tooled properly, that they will ruin the new disc brake pads. Is this correct?

b) What brand of disc brake pads should I get from the market? What brand names are of good quality, and how will I tell they are genuine from that company? I ask because you cannot trust any mechanic, they are all in it to make money, and will always cut corners to make more money.

Any other relevant information would be extremely valuable, thank you.

This is too much. They should max. cost 5-6,000 PKR.

If possible and affordable for you, then for sure, you can buy them.

I think, they are made in Japan, however, just for the sake of their names, they charge too much. I would suggest to buy the items from some reputed 1s authorized Toyota dealer in Open market, instead of Toyota service centers. They charge almost 1.5-1.7 times (or may be even more), when compared to market.

I think, quality, fineness and finishing would be more than enough to tell that the work has been properly done. But yes, there is a limit for tooling for brake rotors. They cannot be "tooled" infinitely and indefinitely.

AOA Brother Basit Ali. Hope you are doing good. I need your advise please. I have toyota vitz 2015 and my front brakes disc pads finished. When I went to mechanic he put desi (Pakistani) disc pads and he told me he put these pads because he needed to remove some lining and he asked me to run my car for 10,000km and he will then put genuine disc pads. Is it the right advise or I put genuine pads because one of my friends told me to put genuine disc pads right away and if I want to remove lining I should ask mechanic to use tool ?

He, the "so-called" mechanic seems extremely dumb, else if, he wouldn't had done that, unless / until, the local, desi disc brake pads met / exceed the criteria of the genuine, OEM disc brakes, which we all know is quite difficult, and almost impossible (considering the QA / QC, and Quality issues of different items here).

Local ones would be quite hard, which is very dangerous for the braking and rotors.

As far as I know, this is not, by any means, the way to remove linings from the disc rotors.

Usually rotors can develop linings due to one reason or the other, but the best way IMO to remove the linings is; use some good quality, coarse sandpaper, and do the effort manually, by hands (i.e. rub the sandpaper vigorously against the rotors, so that the linings get removed or diluted).

Then another method IMO is disc turning (a.k.a Tawa lagana, in local, desi term). In this method, disc brakes rotors are taken to a Kharadia (a.k.a. the person working on lath machines), he fixes them on a machine, and then grinds them, so that the linings get removed.

No doubt that the work done by the lath machine apparently seems much fine and better than the similar work done by the sand paper with hands, however, there are some catches:

1. During lath machine, wear and tear and getting away of metal particles from the rotors is more. No doubt, they look shiny, neat and clean, but their service life gets reduced.

2. On the other hand, sandpaper grinding with hands does not seem very neat and clean compared to lath machine work, but in this method, wastage of metal particles from the rotors is significantly less.

Irrespective the work is done via lath machine or sand paper, disc rotors will develop linings again after some time, and they can automatically get OFF too, but via lath machine, life of disc rotors gets more reduced, so IMO, its best to have the linings removed via sandpaper method.

Now a days, usually mechanics avoid hard work and manual efforts, and avoid doing anything which is not time consuming and go for ready solution, e.g. swapping of engine even if the repair option is available, replacing parts even if they are easily available, etc.

In this method, it seems that either both options were not available, or, mechanic did not know about these 2 common options; which seems impossible to me.

Let's say lath machine was not available, but sandpaper is easily available and he should have opted it, but he didn't, as its laborious and time consuming, so he went for a short cut, ready made solution, at the cost of damage to the rotors, and your pocket / finances.

NO. Not at all!

What your mechanic is doing is not right in any way.

I would suggest following:

1. Change your mechanic ASAP.
2. What is done, is done. Have the current, desi hard disc pads removed ASAP (Disc pads material must be softer than that of the brakes rotors, and they are designed in such a manner that, they get rubbed OFF instead of rotors. If their material will be extremely hard, then rotors might start getting damaged).
3. Use sandpaper technique, or lath machine technique, to remove the linings.
4. When they are removed, install genuine, OEM Brakes pads. If not available, then the best quality ones nearest to it.

In this method, I think your issue will get resolved. IN SHA ALLAH.
