Toyota Vitz F.1.0 Engine Check Light -Error Code P0420

Dear All,

i recently purchase Toyota Vitz 2011 F.1.0 (1 KR-Fe Engine). Soon after purchasing the car engine check light turn on. I went to the workshop (in G-7 Islamabad) and connect it with computer. My mechanic told me that code is P0420 and the vehicle need complete service,cleaning of catalytic converter and cleaning of silencer and the issue will be resolve. So i done all this last week. but after spending 7K on the car engine light came back again with in two days. And now my mechanic told me yesterday that you would need to change the catalytic converter and O2 Sensor. Can someone give me guidelines on the issue as i am not familiar with the market. How i can sort out the issue. Should i go for new Cat Converter along with O2 sensor? what will be the cost and from where i can purchase it in RWP/ISB. and finally Should i take second opinion from Toyota capital first?

It would have been better if you had done this before spending 7K,,
as replacement is only final solution

Thanks Brother. As i was not familiar with error code at that stage. So i prefer to go for tuning and cleaning of Cat. converter rather then going for new one on first stage. Can you let me know from where i can purcahse it and what will be the cost?

I'm from Lahore, you can get both (kabli) from sultan ka Khoo, and regarding price, any Islamabad based guy can guide you better

Bro, I would suggest to get at least 2nd opinion, before going for replacement of these items.

There is a good garage; AutoReforms, at Ali Nawaz Chowk, Rawal Road, Rawalpindi. You may visit them and tell them the whole situation. If they also say that Cat Con will be required to be replaced, along with O2 sensor, then you might have no other option other than their replacement.

I do not know about the cost of O2 sensor, however, regarding Cat Con, genuine, Kabli (which has not been treated with "Taizaab", or any other such stuff) will cost you somewhere 8K-11K PKR, depending on condition. Do check it thoroughly before purchasing.

You can purchase it from Chah-E-Sultan in Rawalpindi, but some khawari may be there.

Should i take second opinion from Toyota capital first?

Bro, if you have got enough money and surplus funds, then for sure, you may visit any Toyota 3S dealership, otherwise, normal good, reputed garages also serve the purpose well.

First you need to change your mechanic they do juggars to other people cars on people money and then tell you to change many items one by one till the issue is resolved and poor customer spends way money then required.

Thanks a lot brother. this will help me a lot. I agree with your suggestion to go for second opinion first. So i will visit "Auto Reforms" on this weekend. Will let you know about the outcome.

For cost i check it on OLX yesterday. estimated cost of Cat Concertos is 12K and for O2 Sensor 3K along with one month guarantee of Cat and 10 Days for Sensor. My question is how i can check the quality of product before purchasing it as i don't have any experties. And how much time it will take to replace and fix new parts along with labour cost on it.?

Agree with your suggestion.I will go to Auto Reforms for 2nd opinion and then change catalytic converter with O2 Senor if recommend same by them....

Bro, tbh, I also do not know and neither I have ever experienced of purchasing these "Kabli" items from the market. Only someone expert, or who had experience in buying them, can guide you better.

And how much time it will take to replace and fix new parts along with labour cost on it.?

I think, max. 1-2 hours. Labor cost depends, and may be somewhere from 500 to 1500 PKR, but its my rough guess.

Dear All,
I would like to update you about the problem. Alhamdullah problem is sorted out now. I visited Auto reforms last week and we change the catalytic converter. No engine light after changing the CC. I drive more then 500 KMs in last few days and thanks that engine check light not back again. Thanks for your valuable remarks and recommending "Auto Reforms".

Just one thing more.. Its almost more then a month now that i am driving my Vitz 2011. I drive almost 2100 KMs in last month. Engine is good in pick and drive. but its reducing engine oil. I just back from the work shop and i put 1 liter engine oil after driving the car for 2000 KMs (not seen any smoke from the Silencer. What could be the issue.?

Replying very late to your thread. I am also facing the same situation. I have a check engine light on my vitz 2012. and my mechanic says its is related to catalytic converter. Also there is problem with engine oil as it seems to be reducing without any smoke or leakage.

Hope you were able to figure out the problem with your car. If you can recommend me the solution as well. Thanks

Bad spark plugs can also trigger this code. Diagnosing means taking in account fuel trims nd sensor data,
