Toyota Vitz Fuel Average

Aslam - O - Alaikum Friends,

I have bought a Toyota Vitz Car 2014/2017 a month ago. I set its meter to show me AVG mileage KM/LTR. Initially, It gave me 12.0 KM/LTR mileage. Within the passage of time, It decremented point to point and so far it drop to 11.3 KM/LTR. Before bought this car, I took survey from different people, everyone replied that it give estimated round 14-15 KM/LTR within city and 16-17 KM/LTR on long route. Is this something with engine oil? Someone from my social circles told me that I am using more viscous engine oil having viscosity level 10-50W. He pointed out that oil should be thinner that is 5w-50W. Currently, This car has been totally traveled 70,000 KM. Need your expert opinions on it to improve its consumption whether what are the other factors and engine oil does matter on mileage?

There are many factors that decide fuel performance of the car and one of them is correct tyres and their air pressure. I hope your vitz has stock tyres and you keep check on air pressure? If not then tyres may be the culprit as it is a normal practice here to install heavier / bigger tyres. Also check air filter. It might be dirty or needs replacement.
Yes engine oil can be the reason of low fuel average but who said 5w50 is thinner? I think your vitz might need 5w20 if odo reading is less than 40k but consult experts before changing viscosity of oil and by experts i do not mean Road Side mechanics!

I think, it is normal and depends on many different factors; with / without AC, traffic conditions, etc.

Yes, it can give, but under many different conditions.

I myself own 2015 model Vitz. In winters and on stock 165/70/R14, it used to give around 18-20 kmpl within City, and now, in summers, with AC and on 185/65/R15 on alloy rims, it gives around 13-15 kmpl, on the same route.

So, I think there is nothing wrong with your car. Driving conditions have changed and they have affected this mileage.

Get rid of your current oil grade ASAP, and only use fully synthetic 5w-30 from some reputed brand, meeting latest API SN / SN Plus and / or ILSAC GF-5 criteria.

I would suggest to look for following items to increase fuel economy:

1. Always use 5w-30 engine oil grade, meeting latest API SN / SN Plus, and / or ILSAC GF-5 criteria. Prefer fully synthetic, from some reputed brand, and 100% genuine and original. Replace oil + oil filter after every 5,000 Kms. 5w-30: Total Quartz 9000 Future Series is best for bucks.
2. Replace transmission fluid, if not replaced recently, and get transmission serviced, including cleaning / replacement of filter.
3. Clean / replace spark plugs, Clean throttle body & MAF sensor, i.e. engine "tuning" (if reqd.). After this, reset ECU by removing one of the battery terminals for 15-30 minutes, and reconnect again. Follow "Idle learning procedure" and start driving.
4. Replace / clean air filter and AC / Cabin filter.
5. Get all the wheels balanced and aligned, if not done recently. Keep tires inflated properly as per OEM recommendations. Also get suspension checked for any / all issues (although not directly related with fuel economy).
6. Always drive with light foot and soft pedal. Accelerate / Decelerate gently. Apply brakes softly.
7. Follow maintenance schedule as suggested by the OEM.
8. Get AC serviced, if not done in recent times.
9. Although not related with fuel economy, but also get brakes serviced, if not done in recent times (I was like, if talking about maintenance, then this may also be added).

My advice is he should shift immediately to oem viscosity which is 0w20 no matter how much the vehicle is driven. I take full responsibility for my advice if the engine is healthy and no oil consumption is noted. He can use 0w20 upto 300 thousand kms.

Then he should go for a brief scan job to assess the engine live data parameters and CVT health.

Oil should be brought back to 0w30/0w20/5w30 asap.
