He probably isn't referring to the timing belt/chain...

It's probably the belt which moves the compressor pulley.

Is the belt damaged from one particular area or whole circumference is damaged?

If it's the first then something must have hit the belt from underneath... with so much lose gravel etc there it's quite possible.

If the belt is damaged all around then there is misalignment of pulleys or one the bearings is to blame and the said pulley is swirling instead of rotating steadily. This would be a more serious matter than the first case scenario.

Start the car and observe all connected pulleys yo the said belt... there should be no swirling.. all attached pulleys should be moving in a steady fashion.. identify the one which is swaying even slightly ... thats the one to blame..

The belt is moving uniformly there is no swirling but the belt is damaged from two different places and one more thing the damage marks on both places are very similar. Here are the pictures of the belt.

So probably the serpentine belt if yaris doesn't have separate ac and fan belts.

And yeah, keep an eye on it specially after driving on bad roads or harsh conditions.

Sir I have taken this car to even worse roads before going to naran but I don’t know what happened this time but i agree with you on the quality part because i could feel the substandard quality of the belt by holding it in my hands.

How many Km you have driven it?
I checked and someone said Toyota recommends to change this belt at around 24000miles (approx 38000 km)

Mine is Just 7500KM driven but i have some relatives who have Yaris and they have driven more than 20000KM but they haven’t faced any issue whatsoever.

The distance between the marks was linear so maybe the object was stuck between the pulley and the belt and the sharp corner damaged the belt again after half rotation.

The Guy said it’s known as the Serpentine Belt but everyone here calls it the Engine Belt.

Engine built is wrong terminology because it confuses it with timing belt/timing chain. It is basically an alternator belt commonly called serpentine belt. Pehlay isko fan belt kaha jaata tha.

Then this was just an unfortunate accident. Good that it is not due to any mechanical problem or due to cheap quality of the belt itself. Otherwise it would have been a pain in the neck to replace it multiple times. But then fact remains that a stone or sharp object may damage it.
