Bro... it really doesn't matter if the engine is running or not.. after filling the oil.. take a short drive so that the cvt oil gets heated and reaches every corner of the casing. After that switch off the car and drain out the excess oil... you are done... remember, over filled oil is the most dangerous thing..

That is the worst advice ever posted,

when you shut off the engine the torque converter drains out half - it then raises the level in the sump. If you drain this excess - you basically dumped a LOT of oil out, Toyota have specified a very nice way of filling this unit, you fill it up from the side bolt with quantity drained out, start engine and wait for the fluid to warm up to specified temperature.

You can read it either with a Toyota techstream tool or with an infrared gun on the sump or use the hack method of shorting 2 pins on the DLC and invoking temperature testing mode by playing the shift lever. Once you get to temperature you drain the excess oil out of the sump with engine running and pack it up.

the testing temperature is between 36-45 degree centigrade, This temperature is CVT oil temperture - not coolant.

Thanx for correcting me bro... and sorry for this misinfo.... it means I am running low on CVT at the moment. I haven't felt any difference in the drive or sound though. i might have drive something like 1500 kms after the CVT fluid change. what to do now? should I add on the fluid with engine running? how do i test the CVT fluid level now? thanx

Salam, guys i got my oil changed from Toyota Cantt Motors Lahore, they opted for the drain plug method.

they open the nut and then opened the plastic drain tube as well, which resulted in 2.1 Litres of oil, then they fit the plastic drain back and started to fill the oil from TC nut, they were of the view that 2.1 came out so 2.1 will go in as well, so they measured it and started pouring, i think around 1.8 Liters went and it started to drain again, so they let it drain for few seconds and then closed it and stopped the inflow as well, so in the end total 2.1 Liters was not poured in, i think it was 300 ml short, they just closed it and then started the engine and connected their device to check temperature, after a while they started shifting gears to check if its leaking or not then took a test drive and thats it.

in all this process i am worried that not all 2.1 Liters got in, i did ask them and they replied that the drain overflowed so thats the sign that its full.

now since i have nearly half of the oil with me they advised me to get it change again after 20km, i dont mind that but i am a little concerned about the amount of oil that went in.

any expert opinions?

Was the plastic drain tube fitted all the way back after draining? There could also be a measurement error in draining or pouring in step

Yes it was fitted all the way back.

i dont think so there was any error because they had their meauring bottle right beneath tha drain. and when pouring in they used another measuring bottle and i checked it both times.

Bro.. actually they didn't open the oil sump.. you haven't mentioned that as well.. the entire oil hasn't actually been changed.. when i got the cvt oil changed, the sump was opened and magnets were cleaned and oil filter was also cleaned. approx 3.7 lit was poured in after that process.

Yes i know, i have mentioned that they went the other route of not opening the chamber so that will off-course not flush out all liquid. i am only concerned that the amount of oil drained and refilled are not equal.

Was the engine running when they drained?.. See @xulfiqar's message in this thread on how it can make a difference in amount of oil drained out.

nope engine was off in whole process. engine was started once everything was done. need to know my course of action now, should i pour more or let it be as it is.

I decided to top up my CVT so that the "LOT" of oil that got dumped out due to non-starting of engine during the draining process could be recouped. That LOT of oil came out to be 100 ml only. I don?t deny the fact that the correct procedure is hot-engine drainage, not the shut off but do u really think that a difference of 100 ml in CVT oil is that a big difference?

your "lot" of oil concept is a bit backwards. If you refill with engine off you will be "short of oil" in the transmission as the measurement in the unit is overflow type. Which means that when the transmission pump stops, some fluid will drain back from the torque converter and raise the level and if you remove the drain bolt to measure the oil it will come out as overflow. Mind you that if you do this on 80C transmission oil temperature you will drain out some oil which will then result in "low level"

That is why it is necessary to follow the prescribed way exactly. which is to fill the unit up with whatever was drained plus about 400 ml, then start engine and either invoke the flashing D sequence or use toyota tool to measure oil temperature and check and adjust oil level in the given temperature range and close the sump plug. This ensures the oil level is 100% correct.

Also note that the car needs to be exactly straight (drive ready range level) when checking the oil level in the gearbox because if it is raised from the front the oil will level out askew and be pooled at the back of the sump and give incorrect reading when you try to check the level from the sump drain plug.

I strongly believe that precision must be kept in mind while dealing with cars and that is the reason why I went to Toyota guys when u pointed out that i refilled my CVT the wrong way. unfortunately they also didn't have any tool to check the CVT fluid level. One of the senior tech even took a test drive and concluded that there was nothing wrong with the CVT. Your advise remained at the back of my mind and I refilled it myself. Poured in 500 ml of original Toyota CVT. started the engine and kept playing with the gears for a while. I have the mini OBD scanner but again it doesn't say anything about the CVT fluid level or temperature. I am still not sure if excess CVT oil was drained out at the right temperature or not but it was for sure drained out with hot-engine (Coolant above 95 deg C) and straight level. the drained out quantity was at best 350 - 400ml. a 100 ml was deficient probably. I must also admit that after refilling this 100 - 150ml deficient CVT fluid, the accelerator paddle PRESS and GO time lag has vanished which i could feel earlier, though negligible. THANX

Hello guys, I bought a 2004 passo and had the steering changed from left to right. The gearbox is not functioning properly now, it jerks when first selected to drive and it does not change gears from 1 to 2, 3....
I need to check if the wiring is good. Can anyone send me a link or PDF file of the wiring going to the ECU or gearbox?

the oil drain temperature is 35C on the fluid, not 95C coolant temperature.

Seems the Estima may have a variation of this gearbox unit. There are two apparent drain plugs on the sump.
can somebody confirm which is which?

your van has either a 4 spd auto or a CVT, which one is it, both units have the spill/overflow fill procedure.

Bro... how can we know the correct fluid temperature i.e 35 C? I have the OBD scanner but it doesn't show CVT fluid temp. I also visited Toyota guyz.. they also attached the scanner but couldn't find out the CVT fluid temperature.
