Turntable, Vinyls?

anyone into turntables?

Not much but recently acquired an early 80's Technics.
LPs are difficult to find locally though.

nice, so which model is it? original stylus?

LPs are available, there are two ways:

1. buy in bulk from junk
2. buy new from dealers 2000-7000 per LP

find an old man in vicinity who is fed up with this and looking from some young guy to take care of collection.

It's a linear turntable. Model Technics SL-QL1
The cartridge on it was ortofon, with omp-10 stylus. Stylus was in a normal condition so got a new one, same omp-10. The 20, 30 models were pricey.

Boss, the junk LPs are literally junk with lot's of scratches. The new one's or well kept used ones are the way to go. Unfortunately there is no variety available locally. And collecting random musician/albums, kind of defeats the purpose. I'm aiming on collecting the albums that I love the most and feel those albums to keep as a permanent collection piece.

What setup do you own and use? And from where do you aquire your LPs. I'm sure it must be a secret and I won't mind if you don't want to share it on a public platform.
I live in Lahore btw and the only oldman I know who owns LPs is an avid collector himself but ofcourse mostly old urdu/Indian music, which is not my choice of music.

i have a couple of them, my old trusty Technics SL-1310, recently i got a new Thorens cartridge for it, works and sounds great every time.

Other is a Dual 505.2 with original Ortofon cart and Stylus in great shape.

Others are for casual use.

Linear TT, hummm interesting. the only linear TT I came across was a JVC.

shud be having a totaly different process and routine to align the cart and all. Or maybe its advanced to have it all sorted out itself by machine.

Onkyo CP1100A was the last player in house it is somewhere in store packed in its original carton. My (late) father had great passion for LPs, had few Master vinyl of 'Sitar & Flute' instrumentals. Then came the audio CDs & Video LDs., player was packed & sent to store room about 27 years ago.

Hope the player has been stored with belt of, else the rubber must be gone, else these machines are built to last an eternity. LPs need environment and proper storage in vertical position, else they get bent and become unusable, Im sure it much have been under proper care in ur home.

both are different domains, analog and digital, just like train tracks, lead to same destination but never cross path, stay at distance

yes the belt is removed and turn table was tapped at 3 points so not to get shock.
LPs are stored up right in styrofoam sheet as books in library.

Oh nice. Both the turntables seem to be very good. Especially the technics SL-1310. A quick google tells it's a very sought after table. I'm sure it must sound excellent!

Yea linear TTs were a great idea but I guess people liked the simple manual functionality of the traditional design. Some linear TTs were designed to play vertical also. They had a puck on top which held the record in place.
Linears have special cartridges and styli, and these are designed with a specific weight, so it's usually plug and play, with very minute adjustment of weight with a screw. No need for anti skating also, since the arm is always at the same angle. Moving the styli forward and backwards is with buttons. Disc size is automatic. And ofcourse, auto stop and return. Another neat feature is "repeat", which will repeat a song.

Take it out and there's a high chance that it still plays. All you'll need to replace would be the belt. Old tech was robust.

repeat function is available in most automatic tables, like SL1310 not only offers repeats but also the number of time u need to repeat as well, the tone arm goes back and then again comes in position to play when the option is selected.

Yes, the cartridge alignment and all is part of ritual and shows ur involvement in the process.

u r right, the TT even being made now mostly include traditional type.

The linear i experienced was a JVC and it did not have any variables like weight adjustment, anti skating etc. so i let it go with a view that it might damage the LPs, as a matter of principle only the basic turntable table offer very few variables. But now i got to know that linear do not need to have many variables due to its design.
