Just returned from Umrah, so here is feedback:

1. It would be much better to book hotels yourself online - you would get better deals
2. If your travel agent is commuting you over Bus from Jeddah to Makkah or Makkah to Medina, you have to wait many hours in the bus so all passengers arrives, it is like a local bus in Pakistan. Better to hire a taxi.
3. Taxi Fares: Jed Airport to Makkah: 200-250 SAR, Makkah to Medina: 400-450 SAR
4. Always get direct flight from pak, PIA, Saudi airline, Shaheen Air etc. it is very tiring if you are going through connecting flight.
5. Hotel fares: Media 250m : 160 SAR, Makkah any 5 star will be around 1000 SAR per night
6. I stayed in Hotel Shohada and Dar ul Mohajreen in Makkah, both are good 3 star hotels, however it is 15 mins walk from dar ul mohajreen to Haram
7. stayed in Karam Al Hejaz in Medina, the hotel was dirty, washroom was leaky, not recommended.
8. if you are traveling with Family, use SAPTCO VIP bus service between Makkah-Medina, 60 SAR per person or hire a taxi

Thanks for the update. Just a question that who recieved you at the Jeddah Airport. Did the authorities checked that you have booked via an agent or just let you pass without such questions and you are open to select your mode of transport to Makkah?

@mani43 I too just got back from Umrah. We paid 40k per person to the Tour Operator for Visa, Accommodation and transport (no ziarat included) and I honestly think that the tour operator charged us way more than he should. Yes the hotels were near but they were not in good condition. I went to a few better hotels, that looked like 3 star hotels, to see how much they would charge per night and I found out that the rooms were clean and only at SR 200 per night for us four people.

But because of rush, there are not alot of rooms available. So finding a good deal by yourself could be a hassle.

Can you apply for Umrah visa by yourself?

Take a look at Al Hateem International they are offering much much better in Premium Package (A) than we got in 40k for 14 nights

@memad, No body checks at Jeddah airport if you are coming thorough an Agent and you are free to get your own taxi. When you book through agent, they are some company in Saudi whose name is on the travel papers, they arranged local buses/coasters that take you to the hotel. But these buses wait to fill all seats and you have to WAIT for hours in bus before it start the travel. It is much much better to get a taxi at 200/250 SAR which is comfortable and will take you directly to hotel.
@zimmi: you can try booking.com, my friend used it and get a great deal from there, many hotel book the room without any advanced payment/credit card - and if it is not hajj/ramdan season, you will find a better room anyways.
and yes some agent can arrange visa for you, I got a quote of 20K / visa from one agent.
