Dear all,

This forum normally attracts people who love to travel, in search of the beauty wilderness presents be it Northern Areas or Coastal belts.

I am sure most of us must have observed the uncontrolled littering in all these areas, and our reaction in these cases is simply unacceptable.

I am starting this thread with only one aim i.e. to create awareness among masses about the power of individual, each of one must hold himself/herself responsible for the environment we are creating and educate others as well.

I tried to look up for a thread on this forum and on internet as well but could not find any thing relevant. If any body is aware of any such activities then please do share this here. we will join forces and come up with some thing positive.

Let us discuss and develop a code of conduct which we all should follow, we should also try to educate the hotel owners and other commercial entities to take all necessary steps in controlling the menace of littering and garbage disposal ( perhaps the commercial entities can also think about creating waste to energy plants)

You will notice from the above links that there are certain NGO's etc who are working in this regard but perhaps there focus of attention is in very far Northern areas specially in glaciers, which should be our concern as well as this is the water which we or our coming generations will be consuming.

Lets grow some more on this idea

However we should first try to bring the change from within, all thats required is common sense. When packing please keep provisioning for the garbage you will be bringing back. Try to pack biodegradable stuff

next stage would be to try and educate the hotel owners about proper waste disposal, if they can join in and pave ways for jeeps without any support from Govt then I am sure they can do something about waste as well, problem is that they may not be educated in proper waste management.

I am with you....and we should start from ourselves first. I had also posted a thread ealier on this subject.

You have also posted a very thoughtful situation re the NGO's working in far flung areas. I dont think a number of people pay charity in reasonable amount for mosques, kids parks or food for needy...then who is funding these NGO's and who are the guys who work in wilderness for months or even years where we feel fedup after a couple of weeks. Why are they interested in glaciers?????????????

Lets buckle up and do our part of job...tell the people what is wrong and set an example by carrying trash back to our homes.

Well if we just dont litter when we visit any place it is gud enuf. Just keep all ur wastes at a single place and at the end of the day dispose it in waste bins if available. If not then burn it coz usually we do have borne fires etc so its best to burn ur trash.

I wonder if u have seen how the hotel owners at various hill stations treat the accumulation of waste bins a visit to behind the kitchen/service area is sufficient to realise how much respect they give to their source of earning,

I have personally seen janitors emptying waste bins across the road of pine park hotel in Shogran, normally people do not stroll out on foot in that area

I think we should bring back our personal waste (plastic bags, juice boxes, diapers etc) back till Islamabad/pindi for proper disposal

YES U R RITE IRFAN. BHT BURAY HALAT HAIN SPECIALLY THE HOTELS AND STUFF R LITTERING ALOT. IN CHINA I HAVE SEEN THAT EVERYWHERE THERE IS A REGULAR VISIT BY THE STAFF THAT TAKE THE TRASH FROM ALL THE SHOPS AND RESTURANTS AND HOTELS TO DISPOSE IT OFF.
YEHAN PAR HOTELS ETC JUST ENSURE THAT they store their wast in large wast bins with plastic bags in them. these bags are removed and given to the muncipal staff.

1st, WE SHOUDL START FORM OURSELVES THEN CONVINCE OTHER TO BE PART OF IT. IF WE WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE OUR PART THEN OTHERS WILL ALSO START TO TAKE PART.
WE ARE ALREADYING TRYING TO KEEP OUR BOTTLES, WRAPPERS ETC WITH US AND DISPOSE IN CITIES EVEN BACK AT HOME FOR DISPOSING OFF.

i never litter specially in nature reserves and while on treks. i keep all the wrapers and bottles in my rucksack and usually burn them in a campfire or dispose it when i get back. i ensure that all ppl travelling with me also do the same..........

i recently went to Toli peer, all the way up, the place is excellent with green plains, but was very disappointed on seeing the wrappers, covers along the track. I think the sense of keeping public places clean should be part of initial school classes curriculum.

i don't know why people find it so hard to keep a plastic bag in their car and to keep all garbage in that? for dry stuff like water bottles, wrappers etc i use my door pockets if i don't have a plastic bag handy.

i guess it's down to the way people are brought up. if they see their parents spitting on the road, discarding things from the car window etc the kids will do the same,.. sadly it is these people who multiply like rabbits so the problem only gets worse and worse each generation.

If you live in any developed country for a while, you will know how much ppl in these countries are passionate about environment and keeping it clean. whenever i come back to my country, I am shocked at the cleanliness situation- and mind you i have grown up in pakistan- so imagine how much these western ppl will be shocked to see garbage and litter everywhere. Thats the reason they want to help keep some of these places clean and contribute towards it. Pakistan has got some of the worlds greatest glaciers. i was in NZ in april, and heard a lot about fox and Frans Joseph glaciers, but when I went there, i was disappointed. there were very small in size and to be honest not even worth taking photos for me. So imagine these ppl amazement when they see the size of our glaciers after visiting these tiny ones overseas.
i hope i have answered ur question as to "why these ppl are interested in our glaciers"
