Upgrading old Suzuki FX

I own an 88 FX that has been in regular family use since it was bought. Now that my parents use a WagonR and I commute to university daily (around 36 kms) in my FX, I wanted to modify it since I don't want to get a new car because it's my grandfather's old car.
I wanted to get an AC+compressor and a more fuel efficient engine that isn't a carburetor engine (ideally manual). My car also goes on very horrible roads at times. Have had master cylinder issues and tyres that have burst because of this. Also wanted to get better suspensions.
What modifications should I go for? What engine to go for and where to get it from? How much would this project cost me since I'm generally new to the world of cars

Fix the vehicle mechanically as in brakes, steering & suspension. It can be done in Rural or Urban punjab anywhere at very reasonable price., for FX being a very successful Taxi car in the era of 90s'. Install LPG in the vehicle for fuel economy. Save your resources till graduation, upgrade to a better year model car of choice when you have enough.

I plan to keep the car for much longer due to the sentimental value. Its one of the last things my grandfather left me so I'd love for it to be of more use and utility in terms of fuel efficiency and modification.
