It is more related to supply and demand than depreciation. The market has little supply of new vehicles and those which are available readily have 10 percent own money so people opt for used cars.

In developed countries the supply chain is mature and is accountable, however, here in Pakistan Toyota has been unable to increase production capacity over the last 30 years and is always under producing, same goes for the rest of the manufacturers.

You do not have options for cars, no brands just three manufacturers. In US there are over 40 registered automobile manufacturers with vehicles in multiple categories competing against each other. Their competition is the buyers gain, dealers try to beat each others rate to do business. On the other hand here there are so very few cars and so many people (mind it that our population growth also plays a factor in this demand deficit to keep on building).

You guys seem to be the dealer's salesmen. Have you recently bought a vehicle? No.
You have no idea about the current situation. I have gone through the process and I know that dealers have swamped the ad section with over inflated prices of cars.

The fact is there are two categories of sellers at PW: dealers and genuine sellers. Most genuine sellers are quoting the right price, but unfortunately they are few on PW. It is the dealers who seem to be swamping the PW section with over inflated priced cars.

Naïve buyers don't know about the fact since these profit mongoring dealers are using shady tactics such as advertising as army personnel driven car, factory maintained car, using personal address, involving their children in responding to ads and other tactics to sell the cars at overinflated price. You can know they are dealers as most cars available for sale on PW are on open letter.

Again, I want to request to everyone to never buy from dealers unless you know one personally. The genuine sellers are few. Wait for them even if it takes months to find a genuine seller.

Market forces of demand and supply do play their role in determining used car prices. But there is no denying that greedy dealers/investors try to grab any opportunity of exploitation of ordinary people that comes their way. It is in their interest to create artificial demand hype and price hike to mint money since they have no morals or work ethics.

Trying to associate everything with demand and supply only to justify a wrongdoing, is not correct. Dealer mentality must be discouraged, at least on Pakwheels. Otherwise, as I said one can find justification for every immoral deed.

Lol. Lol. Lol. If you understand what a clean and unabused car is, you won't be making this statement. Finding a clean and unabused car these days is next to impossible, 5 year old cars are difficult to find mint, you are talking about 2 decade old cars. When a vehicle is mint, it's always expensive, if you want people to stay upto date with prices because according to your standards that's unethical. You are clearly mistaken. Even today most price difference of moving from a used car to a new car is still the same, by your logic, that slab would go so high that no one will be able to buy a new car

Was looking for a Corolla GLi for a friend and shortlisted a few clean ones. One of them was a 2016 GLi automatic (with immobilizer and keyless entry system) with a very reasonable price. On the phone guy claimed that only 1/3 of rear fender was sprayed otherwise it was full genuine. Went to look at the car and it looked very clean but something seemed off. The paint had a weird shade to it and guy had just sprayed oil on engine and inside the fenders. Under the bonnet the radiator support was all scratched up and scuffed and there were visible jugaars done with the wiring as well. All body parts throughout the car were opened (fenders, bonnet, doors, trunk, bumpers) which indicated that a major repair was done on the car. Guy kept insisting and swearing that it was complete genuine but we excused ourselves and went back.
Ended up buying a 2015 GLi Auto with 70K on the ODO from a reasonable seller.

Have you ever heard of the term depreciation? Used cars are not worth the high prices.

Even considering the exchange rate, the price of used cars are insane that are most probably propped up by these profit mongering dealers.

The exchange rate in Oct 2018 was about $1 to Rs. 123, while price of new Mehran VXR was Rs. 8.5 lacs ($6910). I have seen recent ads on PW where the 2018 Mehran is being sold for Rs. 12 lacs or $7741 at the current rate. This means these dealers who I don't consider humans are selling a used car for more than the original price even in dollar terms.

People in the west are more human as they sell cars at humane prices.

I have seen good condition Honda Civic 1994 selling for just $500. Only a profit mongering animal would sell a used car at the same or even high prices as the price of the original car.

If you are a dealer, I have just one advice to you: stop robbing people of their hard earned money to make easy moneY for yourself!!!

Although I believe it's not entirely their mistake a lot of common people are looking for opportunity to RIP off someone always after a deal
I advertised my own vehicle every detail I had & I regretted it
I did this with swift
I did the same with cultus
I haven't sold those vehicle in an appreciated price I actually lost money over both of these vehicles
It's a BITTER truth that if don't lie this will happen to you if you lie like there no tomorrow then you will earn some money

Selling my vehicle doesn't disturb me that much but people trying to deceit other into buying their major accident vehicle tell them that it has only 2 panel repainted / repaired

Dont look at the current situation like it happened overnight. Dealer game has become strong over years and years. They have exploited the the lack of supply to their advantage. Nowadays dealers are booking dozens of brand new vehicles because they started with one in the beginning and now they have capital ready to book the to be launched cars. And people have adopted this business tactic which in my opinion is haram cause you are creating an artificial scarcity in the market and then asking own money on it.

Used cars have appreciated because brand new cars have too. Remember the 2016 Civic people got brand new for 2.6 million when it was launched? And then the same shape and features was hiked to 3.4 million over 2 years? And now a brand new civic costs 4.2 million.

Bottom line used cars will get cheaper when the supply and demand are met with healthy competition in the market. Dealers will be there but they won't be thriving as much as they are today.

The tip is to identify the buyer. The moment you feel as if the guy is a dealer say I won't be selling the car to you Khuda Hafiz.

Well said. Down with these profit mongering dealers. Why not charge usual dealler fee of 10 20 k for helping find a deal? No. These pathetic souls want to earn millions by ripping hard earned money of average ppl.

At the end of the day, these dealers are businessmen, right ? and like every other business, they are also finding ways to maximize their profit, no ?
i mean if anyone of us would be running a business, would we not be thinking of ways to maximize our profit? or would we be selling items at lower than market price ?

and i have also seen some "genuine" sellers misquoting, misguiding the buyers about their cars and their prices.. just as the dealers do : ( so what's the difference ?

That's what I'm saying dealers are selling at their showroom etc it is necessary for them to get a decent profit some of them do cross the limit by asking absolutely ridiculous amount for a decent condition vehicle which is unfortunately rare nowadays.
I do blame them for their berserk demands but public itself is doing far more worst some dealers
For example you fix a visiting time for a vehicle that look decent in pictures now the vehicle is in point X & you live in point B + you have to get a danter + Mechanic to inspect the car will charge you something for inspecting the car & in some case seller bribe the mechanic to convince you to buy their vehicle.
You will end up being conned or tired lose money & valuable time..

Dealers will never sell you car without profit & I don't blame them for that I blame them for asking unreasonable prices but public in general is a reason why you would & should hesitate private seller..
