Using Internet, Skype in New Civic 2013/2014

Hello to all Civic Owners,

If you are tempted to use internet in your new shape Honda civic here are some things you need to consider.

1- The Older Navigation System - Cannot be used with Skype as shown in the recent advertisement

2- The older Navigation System only supports PTCL EVO (not wingle ) to be used as defualt to provide internet to the navigation system.

3- If you plan on using PTCL EVO Wingle for the navigation system & have wifi as well in the car for your handheld devices or laptops, then you need to buy an additional Dongle (cost Rs. 1000) from Mr. Qasim 0300 5555 042 in Islamabad. Otherwise you can just use it for your handheld devics and it will only take power from the car's 3g port to turn itself on.

4- What is shown in the advertisement is the new navigation system which comes with front camera as well, this is on display in the showrooms, but there is no upgrade package announced as yet.

and lastly.. the touchscreen on the older navigation system sucks big time.. but it sure works and takes you places. you only have to spend a few minutes entering the right address, if you are lucky. A better option is to find the location from POI if you are looking for a public place. I hope they have improved the quality of the system in the newer version.

So for now if you want to use skype in your previously bought car, your best option is to plug in EVo wingle and use wifi on your cellphone/tab/pad/laptop

One thing I don't understand is who is going to use skype in their car? The driver probably wont, because he'll be busy driving and the side passenger probably can't because the camera and touch screen is titled towards the driver. IMHO a pointless upgrade for current model owners.

Well, it is similar to the driver watching vdo while driving...

skype has a lot of uses,, people use it for personal calls, professionals use it for business ,and technical people have to be on support calls through skype..

nevertheless, i find it useful if skype can work,, you dont necessarily need the have a vdo call.. but with the microphone quality you will have to shout,

I think its a catchy move they have made by making that advertisement right at the time of new rolla launch.. atleast I am tempted to have this functionality although i know i can use my fone for that with the wifi in car will depend on the upgrade cost and quality of the new touchscreen..

That I call a height of stupidity and distraction at best. Here some cars are coming in with 4G LTE connectivity and MMI can bring up your Facebook feed as well as twitter. There is study going on it and safety agencies are very much against the social media feed coming up on MMI as it can cause distraction. The upcoming apple carplay would have added all youtube or skype connectivity if they wanted but they didn't as they are not thinking like Atlas Honda is thinking..

No video feed of any sort in the front seat is allowed nor there is any at this time. no skype at all. Why someone want to do a video chat? you are in driving seat to drive. Agencies are even against hands free phone and skype is out of question. The problem is there is no neutral agency who should be responsible for implementation of these laws and manufacturer are just trying to attract customers with this useless dangerous feature.

the touch screen is problematic or the navigation software you are pointing to.

New android based navigation system takes around 33 to 38 seconds to boot. This is too much as you need rear camera as soon as you start engine and want to reverse when parked on roadside.

Using skype in a car just sounds like "cool" but makes no sense. Would the driver look onto the road or at the persons face on skype

agreed, new Navigation has the worst startup delay. I talked to Tracking guy Naveed. According to him, it is because they have to show that Warning first.

This is making the reverse camera function utterly useless. What is the point of it if you have to wait a minute to be able to reverse ur car.
