Valve Seal Replacement on Suzuki G13BA (Margalla)

My car was having a misfire issue when it was cold started in mornings, but it would be fine after a hard rev, it would smoke for a few seconds and then the engine would smooth out.

The plugs were getting shorted due to oil leakage. So it was time to replace the valve seals.

The engine is a G13BA in my 97 margalla, which has 320,000 km on the Odometer

Step 1.

Mark the rocker arms, loosen the tappets and loosen the retaining shaft screws

Step 2, bring cylinder 1 and 4 at BDC and fill them with rope, from the spark plug holes

Step 3

1.Bring same cylinders at TDC

2.remove the rocker arms off the retaining shafts

3.Remove the valve springs, by compressing them and removing the spring keepers (the half circular pieces that hold spring with the valve stem)

see the blue rope that is emerging from the spark plug hole

Remove the old valve seal, slide the new seal on.

The old seal is removed by a combination of needle nose pliers and prying with a flat head screw driver

the new seals are stored in engine oil, so they soak and are well lubed when sliding down, onto the valve stem.

unfortunately i forgot to take pictures when the new seals were installed.

Reference image, this is how the seal slides onto the valve stem, it is pushed to down to the lower most visible portion of the valve stem

the engine tappets were re-installed in reverse order. The tappets were adjusted to factory manual values and then the engine was started up.

There was no more smoke or misfiring. I shall upload a video tomorrow after the morning start up

Nice, did you do a diy? Any special tools needed?

I also shifted to caltex 10w30 from liquimoly. 182k on odo, no issues so far since last 1000 km. I hope it stays that way in Summers too.

It was done at osama's . I helped but cant claim it as diy.

It was a job very well done. Took 3 hours

Engine looks like its being cleaned of varnish build up too.

And, its a pretty decent job you guys did.

@margallar sir Please guide! why a rope was used after Cylinder 1 and 4 were at BDC (Bottom Dead Center)?

The springs keep the valves in shut position.

You need to remove springs to access the seal.

The valve would fall into the cylinder, if the rope was not there. The cylinder is brought to tdc after filling it with rope. After this you can remove the spring

3S engine in my car smokes in the morning too.. I discussed it with a mechanic here, he said it is not possible to do it with out removing the head. He said it could be due to weak rings too but as the smoke stops after a while and the engine does not reduce oil as such, I'm sure its due to the oil seals.

"rope trick" can be used on 3S too?

It can be used in all sort of Petrol engines

Yes works on all engines. The hard part is getting the valves back in place.
