Dang its a 96. Hmmm. I should really read the posts more carefully.
Ideally you should start by checking up of any fault coe indication. that gives you a pretty quick diagnosis. The common occurance on the 4A-FE is loss of fuel pressure. Have the fuel pressure tested, should read somwhere around 34-40psi when starting and settles to about 26-30psi around idle.
Before you actually rip open your fuel rails, check and see if you've replaced the fuel filter.
IF you had your head worked on or timing belt replace, check to see valve timing.
That should pretty mujch sort you out!
