Got back to the forum after a few days. Waiting for @Waleeds MIL to be anesthetised.
Reading a few things and especially alvis take on car restorations.
I think that every car must be taken on its merits for restoration/refurbishment.
There is a car that I am hopefully getting that is red in colour which was originally blue. And has been painted almost by a brush. Now I need to get is back to the original colour and take off the almost execrable repaint job. If I get it repainted and leave the rest it will be like wearing trainers and shirt with a Savile row suit. Or if that is not an exact analogy wearing unpolished and dirty muddy shoes with the aforementioned suit. Ever done it ??it jars and is uncomfortable.
Now the DAtsun 260 Z is rusted in several spots and will need sheet metal replacement. Also badges are missing. Getting shiny new badges and stuffing these on the new paint will be useless.. hence the need for a mechanical and body/ inetrior restoration restoration. As afra as original radios etc is concerned... maybe for Model T fords I would not put in a new stereo but for the Z I would certainly get a good stereo... a tasteful one... Blaupunkt even make a navigation system looking as if its original 70s fitment and the speakers have to be hidden behind the original covers. I am not making a museum piece but an everyday car that I can use.
The TR on the other hand needs to be broght back to life... so it will be as new with almost all the original/ replacement bits including lights gaskets etc etc and new chrome and the original engine .. no hybridisation.
Now If I had a Merc 170 in the family cherished and cared for I would maintain the original patina and use it and use it
The dabate will continue patient asleep!!!!
