I've seen a bunch of cars on CNG running hotter than average. I suppose possible reasons could be one or all of the following:

1. It's true that CNG when mixed with air in the intake tract doesn't cool the charge as there's no evaporation. Thus pistons and cylinders have less chance to cool down during the admission stroke. It has to be said though, cylinder or piston wetting is not liked by engine designers as it cokes up the surfaces and destroys the oil film.

2. Natural gas has a much higher octane rating than petrol, 120-130. The timing that's used for petrol is too retarded for CNG and will cause the air/gas mixture to burn later and longer, thus the higher temperatures in the cylinder. Even ignition advancers can't completely alleviate the problem.

3. Air / fuel ratio may be a factor in the overheating problem as well. If the mixture is too lean it might burn too slowly and a situation similar to insufficient spark advance may arise.

There are a couple of things that go in the opposite sense as well:

1. The volume of air induced during an intake stroke will most likely be reduced to due to the space taken up by the natural gas. This will reduce the amount of heat-producing fuel in the engine.

2. The calorific value of gas is lower than petrol, thus the mixture is likely to burn cooler.

3. Natural gas vehicles produce lower NOx emissions. Most (above 90% if I'm not mistaken) of these emissions are directly related to the peak flame temperatures. Thus peak flame temperatures are lower in natural gas fueled engines than in petrol engines.

Of all, I suppose proper ignition timing and proper control of gas/air ratio may eliminate or reduce the overheating problem.

P.S. I'm no natural gas expert, I've just shared some of my thought on fuels and combustion in general.

thanks for the detailed analysis. I have a Toyota Vitz that s being run on CNG. No problems of overheating.

Overheating is never a restricting factor in cng conversion. Learnt this through experience. In fact if you observe carefully a lean petrol mixture is more of a cause. For example my car attains normal operating temperature slow on cng than on petrol (same weather conditions) with air conditioner on when Fan throws air full time

Personally, I think CNG is a wonderful fuel. It's just the poor execution of the technology that gives problems. Not many manufacturers are investing money in it. They tend to favour alcohol and LPG. There are buses here in France that run on CNG, and they're turbo-charged. When the driver let's off the throttle, you've hear a nice fluttering whistle-like sound. And since they're designed for it, they start and run on gas all year.

Have a bit of progress to report. I went to Mr Syed yesterday. He used to be amongst the topmost VW old beetle rebuilders in the past. Now has quietened his business but considering re-expansion.

He took me to a chap near his place but he was out. He owns a Isb registered Golf which I believe is of quite new model.....90s I suppose.

Anyway spoke to Mr Syed later yesterday and came to know that the guy has four or five different types of fuel pumps! I dont know if they are new or taken off engines. He has a business with engines in Shershah I heard. He needs to see the sample physically to come up with the right thing.

About the clutch wire he said they can be repaired reliably here. I dont like this idea tho but you may have no choice other than get them via international mail order (which I would recommend).

Door handles he said he may be able to get hold of but again needs to see the samples.

So everything comes down to SAMPLES SAMPLES SAMPLES!! I cant be sure if sending all three parts over from Isb may be feasible just to see and then again you may be unsuccessful with any or all of your requirements.

Any thoughts???

I think you should keep this lead as a last resort.

They body I guess can be put back right but its the other little things that matter and take most out of the pocket...

First of all, i would like to mention as all others have done here and there in the thread that this thread is a real success alongwith the VCCP..

Secondly, I went to the Itwar Car bazar(near nagin chowrangi) today, my last visit being 2 years earlier, and the most important fact was that two years ago I saw a large number of vintage beauties over there, the heaviest example could be the Alfa Romeo, which I picked up from there, but this time, I couldn't see any vintage car except for toyota 70's models and one 1980 cheverolet,so this shows that either people have restored there interest in restoration(most probably owing to you guys), or have scrapped the beauties...the later one being a horrifying thought though.

at the end I would like to apologize for posting sortof an irrelated post to this topic(the one regarding VW), but this thread is going so well,that it gave me a sureshot feeling of getting a reply over here,that too from experts.

2. year is 1970 and the engine is original.interior is also in a fine condition...not planning to invest a huge amount due to some financial issues.

Hello Asad, my response to comments on the red Beetle posted here is:
-rear fenders seem to be welded to body at the lower end, where the running board is bolted. Driver side A pillar lower end is a mess, not the easiest piece to repair. Rear fenders are from a 1974 or later car, notice the lights, and bumper bracket cutouts, larger at back, smaller at front of car.
-however front bonnet area is clean, both steering box access points covers still in place!
-I would price it at 15-20K, assuming all taxes are clear.
Why the low price? Later models are (generally) not that desirable. The car has no USP that I can see..apart from the alternator
