Thanks a lot for the link! I went thru each and every word on all the pages and now am a bit wiser. In a nutshell, VWs were never officially imported into India as such but private imports were common. Plus a large number of cars seeped in from Goa etc.

Would like to join the Indian enthusiasts in thier discussions. Hope I find the time to join team bhp soon.

    Not many details, sorry. Could not meet the owner else might have heard his tales of woe.

    Heard he was in the middle of a resto but got creamed by his mechanic who was unable to handle things. The half finished project was hauled to this guy who has reasonable expertise with many bikes.

Just for interest's sake, I know restoring a bike is not easy, how does one go about doing it? Taking an example of the suspension bits for example, they'd need to be reconditioned or re-manufactured isn't it? And rings and pistons? Crank assembly? Chain and sprockets? Gearbox? Clutch?

I think its quite simple to restore a bike if you compare it with a four wheeler. Of course, for early tin like Triumphs it is hard to locate parts and get mechs who understand their intricacies.

I had a friend in Med school who restored a Honda CD 200. I used to enjoy seeing the work in progress and was quite jealous at one point in time when I saw the complete bike, every nut n bolt apart stored in a room with half the space to spare awaiting re assembly .

thanks for sharing the bike pics. Always great to see project bikes and cars being salvaged. Once i got sick and tired of my bike mechanic and decided to open one myself with my car mechanic. Deal was that we will strip it of every nut and bolt ncluding the engine and gearbox. It took us about 45 minutes to tear it apart and another 15 days to restore it and put it back on the road....now I have 4 bikes awaiting some symphatetic attention ... shame on me for ignoring them

well its not your fault that you have 3and a half convirtibles the half being the fiat 500 please do restore your motorbikes as they are just as valuable to promoting vintage motorised vehichles.

I managed to get my hands on this 1964 Honda c72e AKA DREAM 250 Thanks to 2 people on this perticular forum "hope you guys read this so you arent left out" its in working order just needs some TLC and will be on the road although im not going in for the resto as yet just because its too hot to be looking around for parts and everything ,but hopefully it will be running like a dream by this winter.

mabrook on your latest acquisition. Honda looks in very good original low mileage bike. Good idea to get it going first....resto can come later when you have spare time and cash

I am really a biker at heart. I love the combination of looks, speed,sound and right kind of vibrations.....classic bikes have all that. I just wanted to get my cars out of the way....no reliable mechanics for these bikes in Karachi. I guess I 'll have to start working on them one by one.

Hi was looking forward to meeting you in Islamabad last week as Romano told me you were going to be in town.As for the honda started her up for a while and had a short ride , still having problems with the electrics and the valve popping sound my mechanic isnt available and i don't want to open up the engine my self so keeping it as a winter project , I came to a conclusion after going thru the papers and the motorbike its self that some where in between the first owner and the owner before me was another person who had used it from some time which might be the reason why some parts are modified and tampered with but luckily nothing major . already got a good used wiring harness for it and a rectifier which will sort out most of my wories . Other than that not major parts needed unless I decide to get it overhauled aswell . Im lucky the Chrome held up to the Karachi Humidity and sea spray but will need to get one part that is supposed to be chrome but its very badly pitted so it cant even be rechromed.

I would agree with you to some extent that bikes are trickier than cars to restore as one can still manage to find parts for cars and mechanics are plenty. Parts for bikes are hard to comeby infact non-existant in Pakistan. Like you said, there is not a single classic bike mechanic that you can trust. I once hired a mechanic on theka to work at my house....he completely stripped and restored 3 bikes for me each taking about a month. Bikes were a 1942 BSA M20, a 1947 Norton ES2 and a 1941 Triumph Tiger 80 (tikli). On the 4th bike that he started he began to misbahave, got greedy and ran off with a hefty advance. Another mechanic sold my restored 1961 Norton Jubilee Twin without my permission and himself disappeared from the scene. There is no risk to your entrance to this forum as this is as much your forum as it is ours

I have had my share of woes re. mechanics but havent been bitten as hard as you have!

The Jubilee is sitting in you-know-whos garage. But Im not sure if its a worthwhile overall with so many moons gone by.

A couple of posts up the guy praised that bike mechanic with the 3GL.....i am all ears...who is this God sent gift to the compromised classic bikers of KHI

very true regarding the matter that most classic bike mechanics in Pakistan are not reliable regarding restoration of vintage motorbikes mainly because of the the virtually zero availability of parts and so they make do with re conditioned old parts or get parts made or modified from the neighbor hood lathe machinist . But this isn't the case with all motorbike mechanics, I have seen some old timers who have been working on motor cycles since the 50s and have acquired the needed expertise and parts over the years. I have noticed that most of the work done on motorbikes that are destined to leave Pakistan is done way better then you or I could think of the reason being the amount of money these people get

Waheed in Pindi is the mechanic who restores bikes for export. He does a good job as he has his own collection of bikes that he sells to his foreign buyers. Once the deal is done, he sends them a list of parts that he requires and restores the bike once the parts have arrived.
