I have an idea which i think is worth sharing on this forum because the lifeline of this forum-the vintage and classic cars in questions are an endangered species because of the presence of these 'breakers'.
We often come across people who post (usually once and never again) about a place where they could go to find classic cars. Most of us-and it is but human-think of them as newbies who dont know much about these cars and ignore their questions because they've been asked too many times and we dont have any better answer than 'No'.
When AsadIshaque mentioned the rate at which these kabaris find old cars to hack into bits i was shocked and alarmed because even i couldnt find so many when i'd go around town hunting for them. Point being that there ARE quite a few classics out there (more so in Karachi than in Lahore) and they ARE dying.
Now that doesnt sit too well with someone from the younger generation such as myself because by the time the youth hope to have enough money to embark on such projects these cars would be available in much less numbers and would naturally be harder to get. Not that they're any easier to find right now.
What i propose here in this forum of decent and enthusiastic men(sorry i dont see any women here-yet) is to establish a forum on this very website about a listing of sorts. An active running listing of all the cars available in whatever condition at whichever location ( at a given date with expected time remaining as in the case of breaking yards) so that anyone, just about anyone can use it to go shopping and save a classic that might otherwise end up as a Dalda tin can as AsadIshaque mentioned.
Some people would disagree at the point that not everyone is properly initiated with regards to classics and these cars might just end up being mangled or mutilated in some way. My counter to that is simply this that AT LEAST the car will still be there, in whatever condition. These cars once restored or looked after ( as mentioned by AsadIshaque many cars going to these breakers are in pristine condition and i am flabbergasted as to how and why they end up there) which is not impossible, will have the opportunity of changing hands and staying alive for as long as possible.
I'll end with this plea to all of you who know of such cars or such places where they are being hacked to make a little effort and establish a portal, preferably regular contact with these breakers so that we can let people know when a classic's neck is on the line, people who want to and have the money to save these classics.
PS: i didnt start such a thread myself because i'm not in Pakistan right now and have no idea of any classics available which would otherwise be endangered. But this is my plea to whoever does know (Shoutout to AsadIshaque) to put up a thread, update it when you can at your convenience and it really isnt that hard. And there ARE many serious buyers out there who just dont have a clue where to look. All of us here are lucky, lets spread the magic shall we?
