The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest classic car and hot rod event running up and down historic Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The cruise runs from 8 Mile Rd in Detroit, through Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Royal Oak, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, and Pontiac!
I had heard about the event and had been planning to attend for the past several years but could not do so for one reason or another. I checked the forecast and while it did forecast some showers towards the end of the day, the day was going to be nice and sunny. I left right after Sehri and made it in just under 5 hours (with an almost one hour wasted at the border due to sheer volume of traffic heading for Michigan) It was the usual story all the way to the destination...drivers of other cars waving, honking, giving thumbs-up and slowing to take pictures. The cruise runs from Ferndale to Pontiac and back. Pontiac would have been the closest point from the border but I chose to start my cruise along the Woodward Ave. from Ferndale with the idea that when i reach Pontiac I can just head home.
It was an eye popping, jaw dropping spectacle...something I saw for the first time. Imagine more than 30,000 classic cars and hot rods with more than a million spectators lining both sides of the road. I heard that people occupy the best spaces by putting out camping chairs and gazebos the night before. You can also park your car on the median but its the same story of first come first served. Most people however choose to drive their cars along the road but there was no shortage of cars that were parked for display..some with 'For Sale' signs. I did spot a few VW's - beetles, buses and Karmann Ghias but mostly it was Chevy's, Olds, Pontiacs, Nash's and Fords. Admittedly there were a lot of cars I had never seen before or heard of.
The run from bottom to top took me about three hours. I did park Billo (my 1960 beetle) along the way for about 30 minutes to better enjoy the cars myself but as I was driving a car that held a lot of interest for the spectators I took most of the pictures while driving.
I have posted the pictures on my thread. I don't think re-posting them here would be a good idea but I'd like to share them with the classic car crowd as well so if you'd like, please visit the thread and check out page 20-on.
