Unfortunately there is very little we can do to reverse the damage international media, our politicians and fundamentalists have collectively done to us. I also live in West Africa (Liberia) but under the UN umbrella so things are not that bad for me. In fact, in the english speaking part (Ghana, S Leon, etc) it is not as bad as in the countries colonised by the French. If I were you, I will restrict my movements in a place like Gabon and spend the limited time (only 2 months). If you want muslim food, look for Labonese restaurants they are your best bet or Indian. By the way Gabon is expensive like rest of Africa but far cheaper than many African cities such as Dakar. Of course currencies linked with Euro such as the CFA offer far less value than those linked with the USD. Always keep your business cards handy and the contact numbers of english speaking colleagues who you could call in an emergency.
