I got the wheel bearing changed but the whine didn't go away. The bearing was worn out anyway, replaced it with koyo.
So with wheel bearing out of the way on close inspection the sound was coming from CVT area, I went to gears shop and made them trace the sound and it was indeed coming from CVT (according to the guru there)
I am suspecting something went wrong as I recently had the AC compressor replaced but not sure how it links with transmission. There is no visible damage to hoses or oil leakage under the hood.
The transmission is behaving normal otherwise, there is no delay between mode changes or lack of power, the whining sound becomes much less after a km which indicates it's related to increase in oil temperature. I am reluctant to change the CVTF without being sure as its costly.
On closer inspection now, It's a CVT(or ?) whine, which changes with RPM but only when moving and disappears when car is stopped or idling, even in D.It sounds very similar to when you reverse your car and hear a smooth whine in any car. That's the best explanation I have.
Interestingly the sound appeared almost overnight. We do however have a toddler who likes to kick around, recently broke the dashboard glovebox, is it possible that he suddenly kicked the gear lever while car was moving, that I am not sure of anyway :).
