Vitz Coolant Temperature 96C. Normal?

I was driving around Murree and Nathiagali and observed the coolant temperature to be between 94 and 96C.

I am using bluetooth OBDII transmitter to check temperatures. The app I was using shows the red (engine hot) arc around the range of 110 and 120C.

I stopped the car since I couldn't hear the radiator fan running and checked. And in fact the radiator fan wasn't running. Is this normal?

Are you aware of the temperature when the fan should start?
In urban Lahore, I remains between 84 and 86C.

Radiator Fan of Vitz should turn on at 97C to 98C. Temperature upto 101C is normal in Vitz and specially when you are driving around hilly area as you said so.

Is there any way to actually test this on city roads?

Yes rev engine to 2500rpm and keep it their until temperature reaches 98C and check fan.

This isn't working. Even if I maintain idle RPM of 3100,then temperature climbs to 96 and then falls back to 93 again.

I reckon there should be some kind of thermostatic valve controlling this. You'd know better.

No if temperature is dropping means fan Is okay.

As hassan said, if temperature drops back to 93C that means its the fan working.

but I didn't hear the fan start....

Or unless it is a variable RPM fan and it started slow and I couldn't hear it. I'll need to repeat the test with one person standing at bonnet.

If temp is NOT rising further then its normal, all engines run hotter when driving uphill. My civic's fan turns on at 95C

Yes it is normal, normally engine operating temp designed for hot zone is thermostat value open temp is 82C, fan trigger on at 93C according to service manual, but car imported from japan vits ,platz fan turn on temp is 97C may be it must be designed for colder areas, i have also verified from official yaris/vitz forum.I have platz with 1sz-fe engine. you can not modify easily ECU to fan trigger at 93C which is recommended for hot zone. One perfect solution i have done by program a micro controller chip , reading temp data from sensor, and trigger at 93c, and with AC fan on always. you should also for such solution if you located at hotter zone.
