this car got cleared from an embassy in 2007..so got computerized registration

I spotted another genuine Ragtop Bug in ISB a couple of days back. It's apparently a '59 RHD (like Asad's, but this one would have fooled me - looked exactly like a '61-'62 complete with fuel gauge, push-handles, black Wolfsburg badge and all), brown. Has popout windows and later slotted wheels, reg no. RIC 262.

It was too dark to take a picture with my crappy VGA camera phone, so didn't even bother. The car has recently changed hands and I very regrettably missed it. Apparently a local car, owned by an 'old' VW mechanic for many years.

Perhaps Romano can throw some more light on the car's history. Not sure whether the owner's a member here.

That seems to bring the known Ragtop Beetle count in RWP/ISB up to 4:

- This '59 RHD
- The '58 LHD owned by Mr. Yusuf in Pindi for many years
- The '63 LHD owned by Mr. Panni
- The '57 LHD Oval owned by Nasir (formerly mine)

Any others???? :-#

RIC 262 is Shakil Qureshi's car. I doubt it whether he would have sold it.
It is absolutely original, and mechanically pristine, to say the least! And has a nice patina to the exterior.

Haynes manual is around 300mbs and Chilton's around 40mbs. Can't be emailed. PM your contact and will send you the CD. But you should be the contact person in Karachi for both manuals distribution.

I like the most valuable input you share with us here. I hope to see more of your posts as you are hitting the nail bang on the head and providing us with many fine points like not using grease on the starter shaft.

I visited the Lawrence road market a couple of months ago but noticed that they no longer have VW bits. One would be lucky to get anything VW or MB and perhaps now one would have to go through 10000 pieces to find a part that could be usable. Rs 100 per piece is a dream price as the scrappers at shersha would demand much more *if* they have a regulator in stock. I did not know one could mix n match benz alternator bits into the VW unit. Interesting. You are very right about the possibility of a missing thrust washer in the alt Bruit has. To highlight this I was looking for an 'exploded view' diagram. I reckon some 'ustaad' must've dismantled the unit and forgot to install all the bits back. Hope to see more of your posts here xulfiqar.

the alternator and starter parts have to be rummaged in the industrial salvage that are the little buildings inwards starting from the screws market. They have tons of bosch units that they break everyday for their material in weight. I bought a perfect BMW diesel starter which I made to work for my Golf Diesel - using the Golf's drive gear and front.. Cost me Rs2000/- My starter's commutator and carbon brushes were worn - I rebuilt the whole thing to brand new performance.

The alternator pieces have to be cross checked with a sample in hand - But be prepared to move lots of heavy metal and get ALL of your clothes dirty for life (wear steeltoes for safety) - I sometimes had to climb upper levels to rummage fans, motors, alternators and starters (being 300 pounds and 6'5" doesnt help in a small place)

If you guys want to buy a genuine type - Grounding cable (braided type thick piece) You can find it there too.

About Rs100/piece - its legit as they are going to hack them up too - Ive seen shops/dakoos in Shersha ask for Rs 2000/- for a regular 14V Bosch regulator - My reaction was - Are we supposed to laugh or smoke the same stuff you are..

for the oil leak guys.. If you redo the cylinders and heads with properly heli-coiled studs, and use threebond 1104 to seal the pushrod tubes - you will have it leak free. At least thats how I fixed my engine - it used to blow gaskets - heli-coil to the rescue, MUCHO Rupees spent at Sindh Madressah market - Threebond and Hylomar from Marriot road rendering my wallet to lose its weight, 1 days precision work and my Beetle was carrying me everywhere (while singing Dak icht Berlin)

I see a gear shift rod problem being reported. Buy a stick of PTFE and find a very very good and honest machinist to make the bushing - have him groove (not rifle) the inside so it can hold a little silicone grease in it. - It will shift like butter - I made the bushings for my Golf's shifter rod and they'll last the car Im sure

On a serious note, let me know if he has failed to deliver. We shall go on to plan B, namely hiring a mech (not a VW specialist but someone who can work under my guidance to bring the bug back on road) who would work at the spot for you so we can *drive* and not tow the bug away.

@Doc well, I was in TMK, and i came back like 5 day's ago I was busy the first two day's, called him the day before yesterday he said ''I'm off'', I told my uncle to call him he called him yesterday to tell him to get the car started ASAP, I called him today he said ''I am working on your car, it'll be running by tomorrow, I said you always say that, he said no: ''Take it tomorrow'', now i'll call him tomorrow at around 1-2 pm and ask for an update, if he hasn't done working on it. I'll give you a holla.
