Guys,

I need to overhaul my engine. What's your opinion on replacing it with another one (provided i can find one in decent condition). I was also thinking of putting in a bigger engine if i'm replacing it.

Why Farrukh... Shafi Ustaad has been working on your Beetles engine ever since you bought it... then how come you need to overhaul it already.

not eversince naveed...he worked on my beetle only when i bought it...haven't been there again...that was last year

I didn't get the engine overhauled back then cause there was no need...there were issues with heads leaking compression so only that bit was taken care of.

Now that i need to overhaul the engine, i might as well go for a bigger engine for that ooomph!

what is your original engine? as long as it is not a 1200 you will not require major mods to fit a 1500 or 1600 in it. however if it is a 1200 you'll need to do minor bodywork to the engine bay to make any of the larger engines fit. a few years ago there were piston & sleeve kits available throughout pakistan and even i took my 1300DP to 1600DP (had to find used heads) but the transition was painless.

my suggestion would be the 1500 "H" engine if you intend on using her as a daily driver as it is a very good block and handles temperatures VERY well. i think the 1500 was the best overall engine in a VW type 1. however the 1302 & 1303 (specially) need a 1600DP as they are slightly heavier and can make good use of the extra torque to drive daily.

Have heard a lot about this whiz kid Basit in Karachi. Does he actually exist? Or is he just a figment of our imagination? If he does exist, has he EVER done any work on Beetles?

Yes he does exist. Have ruined quite a number of bugs over the years. Although i would say that he has skill, but it was only used to "modify" the bugs. I'm a purist and hence i have a negative opinion to the guy. Plus, he is lazy. Just my opinion.

To make my V-dub's engine cranking/starting up smooth, other than self (starter motor) do I have to service...?

Yup, its a 1200 and its more than daily drive i don't drive my other cars at all except maybe once or twice a month for a short run...

since the bug is grounded, i really wanna get it back on the road asap. I'll look around for the 1500H engine but you know luck is scarce for good old vw engines and with the current situation in khi shershah, god only knows when i'll be able to get her back in service.

apart from the slight performance that i'll get from a bigger engine, my main reason for considering a swap is that i run my A/C practically anytime and everytime i'm in the car and a bigger engine will obviously be able to handle the compressor load better.

ah, in that case you MUST have a 1600DP engine. the added torque will be ideal to handle the loads of the AC compressor and still have a car capable of being driven all day/ every day.

cleaning & gapping your plugs, cleaning & setting the points, replacing a blocked fuel filter etc will all help the car crank over easier.

"serivicing" (AKA washing the engine) doesn't do much for the aircooled flat4 (on the top half). best thing to do is to keep the top half (cold zone) clean and get the bottom half (hot zone) thoroughly cleaned so to prevent any blockages in the fins which will lead ot hotspots and possible overheating & engine failure.

avoid pressure washes at all times when cleaning your engine.

The dome wheel cap's & Rear decklid say that it's look's like a '65-'66. I know I'm wrong.

that's what they say market price and resale bla bla bla thats why mehran won't die in 2000 years
this car i spotted is in a neat nick forget the cost and this that check its originality i think this beetle is closest to what should be called Classic
