The first sign that the fuel pipe on your air cooled VW has reached the end of its servicable life.
The seepage turns to a spurt and the results can be quite disturbing. The cheaper version of the fuel pipe works quite well but has a shorter life and hardens like wood in about 6 months before developing cracks and showing signs of seepage.
With the approaching summer season it is important not only to get your fan belt looked at for wear and tightness but also the fuel hose, especially the section between the fuel pump and the carb. (where positive fuel pressure exists when engine is running and for a little while after the engine has been switched off.)
For my fleet of cars, I had bought a roll of Continental Contitech (Made in Germany) fuel hose from Wolfsburg West and offered the excess to other club members for their cars. As expected the 60 ft length was sold out within 4 days and I have received requests from 8 other car owners who could not respond to the e-mail fast enuff.
