Want to overhaul my corolla 74 model...should I?

hey guys. i was thinking of doing a small project with my corolla 74. its been in the garage locked up for the last 10 years. has not seen daylight since the summer of 1999

it was my grandfather's car. and has only been driven 50,000kms. he was the first owner, and bought it brand new in 1974.

am thinking of:

1) overhauling this current 1300 litre engine

or

2) put some other new engine

but cant decide what would be better. so do tell me which engines are a good option for this car???

also, which is the best mechanic to get engine overhaul for this engine in rawalpindi/islamabad?? name and phone numbers would be appreciated.

avoid the new trend of fitting stupid engines to original cars. restore it to original spec and if you need help in ISB/RWP, contact spectra.

thanks storm. i just found spectra's old thread of his car's revival. left him a msg there.

my grandfather's car is practically new. been in the garage and is virtually rust free. its like totally brand new. with no dents or even a single scratch. looks like my granddad never took it out much!

so basically i am going to be overhauling the engine only. which mechanic would you suggest for that??

Why do u want to overhaul the engine? because 50,000 kms is nothing for this engine,just drain the engine oil and fill up with fresh one,remove all spark plugs and put a little bit oil in combustion chamber through spark plug hole then crank the engine by rotating the pully with hand,after few revolution put the spark plug back into cylinder head and start the engine,let it run idle for 10 ~ 15 minutes.

Good advice. We had a London model 74 Corolla back in 1985 and I remember the engine lasting for over 150K Km's when we sold it.

AFAIK, it had a 1200 cc engine, not 1300. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong..

Would suggest to keep the original engine if it works, otherwise an partial overhaul should work fine, any decent mechanic would be able to do this fine enough. You can also possibly get a decent 2nd hand 1300 engine from a 1980-82 Corolla which would bolt straight in and probably be cheaper than an overhaul.

Nevertheless, my prefferred approach always is to get the car out in as little money as possible. Appropriate upgrades and improvements can always follow in time.

The '74 (chaurathar) is arguably one of the best Corollas ever made along with the '82 (beasi)... I have never been able to match the pleasure of driving these models with the front wheel drives.

replace engine oil and filter (prime system if you can), fill carburettor with carb cleaner- do a compression check and fire her up,

she will be in great running order I tell you the toyota pushrod K series engines only need overhauls once every world war.. they last forever

and yes KE20 will have the 2K 1.2 litre (blue block) engine

If you have the urge for an overhaul due to a noisy bottom end, ask and I'll tell you the trick to properly align the timing chain of this engine

thanks for the advice guys. i am going to have it checked because i remember 10years back it was using up too much engine oil. so just some minor adjustment might be required. i confirmed the milage. its done 36500 miles only.
