new age iphone/android drivers are easily overwhelmed by excess information. Cars of the future will not even have an rpm meter either - just vehicle speed and fuel level.
The older cars (like my ancient 1995 mercedes) uses an oil pressure gauge but no red lamp for oil pressure, it does have an oil level light though - it illuminates if you are low about 1 litre. They had assumption that the driver is qualified enough to understand the gauges as they provide vital information.
when i switch on the ky the dash has about 10 warning lamps to check. It even has a brake pad wear sensor lamp. The new ones have even more and you can easily see how the users are befuddled about them - while never looking in the manual.
SO - for Honda, they are cashing in - less gauges, less expense, more profit. WHO CARES about the driver, if they are choosing to drive a car as numb and boring as a city - they are using the car as an appliance.
