What efi engines are possible to swap with Honda civic 1990?

I don't know much about cars. I bought my first car a week ago, that is civic 1990. After driving about 30 kilometers, there was something wrong. It couldn't start. So I towed to a mechanic and came to know it had the gas kit issue because of the leakage in radiator. The mechanic resolved the issue. Later that night, I drove it around 10 kilometers and there was smoke coming somewhere from the engine block and the engine was very hot. There was some weird engine noise too but I slowly drove back home. Now please suggest me something. Should I go back to the same mechanic or what?
Or should I go for an engine swap? The current engine is giving me around 50 kilometers in a cng tank. Please suggest a reliable solution.

IMO Reliable solution is to go for engine swap from renowned and experienced mechanic if u r in LHR go to carigar restomods Surkhail bhai will guide u better. There r many engine option that u can swap in civic dolphin shape like D15,D16,D17 also if u want more performance then there r more options but lets be practical the engines I mentioned above r easily available can easily be maintained available in both manual and automatic,vtec and non-vtec

What's the difference between vtec and non vtec?
Performance, economy, reliability?

Performance is the difference nd not that much difference just a little bit better throttle response or if u drive ur car by pushing the pedal to the floor then you’ll see the difference otherwise vtec or non vtec both r good option but if u decided to change ur engine then u should go for vtec
