Annual road tax is down to your CO2 emissions. The big engined AMGs are all in the highest band

My fav is the w124 500e. Was my fav car 20 years and still is. In that time I've been to see 6. Non of them were perfect. One day. I'll get my hands on that naughty amg.

I have a freind here in houston that has a very nicely kept 500E W124 - that thing moves with authority - it swings the speedo needle at 100 mph like its accelerating from 1st gear.

The C36 was great in its time but short lived. The C43 replaced it, then the supercharged C32, C50, C55 then the C63. In the western world they sadly depreciate like bricks,... which makes them used car bargains.

They age fast and are sor of considered "common" over time. Like all the greats (M3s, RS4s etc) these models eventually get replaced and since they are not cheap to run or insure they must be heavily discounted in order to sell them. I sold mine for ?30k with only 10,000 miles on her!

"Age fast" meaning "wear out"? Not cheap to run in terms of gas and insurance only, or do expensive repairs count into that?

there are two problems with AMG - one is that their spares are phased out before they end the production run, meaning that if you require a replacement engine long block for an AMG car the item is always NLA even after a year of production. It needs to be remade by hand = pricey.

secondly most are leased and the handfuls that are owned are written off as tax deductions quite often.

Its like any other expensive car, they are never meant for second or third owners.

That's the case with any merc though. If you want to take proper care of it through a dealer, it's going to cost serious cash. That's why almost all the privately owned mercs in pk are just sheds now. Each one of them is worked on my a roadside "ustaad". Same with cars here. No MB service history means it's not worth much anymore.

With Full service history they are a viable option, specially if they carry an extended warranty

I have seen a lot of AMGs being totalled after an oil loss from the crankcase as the long block along was costing nearly 80% of the value of the car which was only 1 year old. Similar car with 3 number badge was not totalled as the engine was available for peanuts compared to what the AMG item was.

The build of the chassis is the same - except for brakes - e.g. brakes on any AMG will land about USD 2000/- for a full replacement of discs, pads, bearing repack etc. similar 3 number badge car is about USD 500/-

If you are accustomed to toyota/honda/nissan driving style then you may or may not like the drive of a benz - specially the older ones, the older ones actually engage you as part of the machine. the later ones are a bit numb but with an AMG when you boot the go pedal and the monster gathers its considerable loins - it will unleash a very raw power which will be controlled with the precision of a 12 string guitar.

you might need to invest heavily in some tools and also a lift if you are a DIY shop, The good thing is that they are built to last and can be serviced back to 100% specification unlike any japanese car.

There are German cars all around me, so I am not all that unfamiliar with how they drove. The last AMG I drove was the C63, but I have driven the SLS too. My choice is the E63 so far.
