What should Pakistan export Rice + Mangoes or CARS

I know, Pakistan is an agricultural coundtry, but why do we need to stay like this. Even Japan once used to Export Rice and clothes, but they modernized, and focused on their industy and now look at them, eveyone is crazy about their cars, they are not Angels yaar, they are people just like us. Why not us try to be like them, and put away the RICE bags, LoL, and export cars for a change.

Japanese did not make good cars in the beginning in 1950s, infact Americans used to make so many jokes about them, and their SHOEBOX like Rice producers cars... Americans used to call them degrading names, but now, American buy the most amount of Japanese cars in the world.

And the reason why I am crazy about Revo.

Its not so much about THE CAR, but what it represents. It represents a RESPECTED Pakistan for Future. Imagine if we started to export cars in future, instead of Mangoes, Rice, Towels, as our main exports now. Yes, it will be an uphill battle, but we need to start from somewhere.

Yes, it will take time, but if we don't do anything now, just stay satisfied with the status quo and keep importing Fully made cars, the situation will not improve. Even Allah said in Quran, no nation (Qome)'s condition is changed, unless that (Qome) nation is willing to change their ways. So now is the time to decide, do we want to change our ways, and work hard and support our local industy, since now the industry is improving quite fast, or we just ignore this opportunity like many times in the past, and just be happy with Imports. Heck we even import edible oil like Palm oil from Malaysia, that can be produces in Pakistan. Little things like that, people should think about, specially those with Money and talent should invest in Pakistan.

I will too Insha Allah, once I have enough of both, the educational, work experience and Money.. Insha-Allah.

@datzburier . you are absoltely right . but i am amazed only one thing that you are also sitting abroad like all other talented guys are doing n in this way our country talent is going in other countries which is not a benefit for us . sorry if you mind . . .

Well looks like you have heard of Brain drain but have ever heard of "Reverse Brain Drain". This is what all those who are abroad would like and I am sure @Datzburier is one of those ppl who think like me and of Reverse brain drain.

Incase you do not know how it exactly works: They hire You and offer to take you outside your country you learn how they work and their technology and then after a certain amount of experience and finding the right oppurtunity you return and inturn teach your countrymen. Hope you got what I mean

@afnan, you have a good point brother. The Pakistanis abroad are also benefitting Pakistan in many ways. They are ambassador of goodwill, for Pakistan, let me elaborate on this a little. When foreigners see Pakistanis doing well in all the fields, in Detroit Suburb where i live, there are many Engineers of Pakistani origin. Now, how does that help Pakistan???? It helps, by giving the Americans an exposure to the skill of Pakistanis here in America, they see us as competent people, who are working shoulder to shoulder with them, it helps to formulate a positive image about Pakistanis, as just as intelligent people as them. Plus when a company decides to relocate its operations to another Cheaper Labor country such as Paksitan, it helps alot to have Pakistanis here, who can convince the American Managers here, by their talent and proven skills that Pakistan is the country they should Relocate their operations to, as this is going on all over Asia. Many INDIANS have done this, and now GM, Ford and Chrysler have shifted a significant number of their operations to India. Same can happen for Pakistan, as there is a sense of awareness going on in Pakistani community as they are noticing the development in the Paksitani auto industry.

I also agree with RacerF1 bhai, you are correct to point out the Reverse Brain Drain phenomenon. I would like to add, some professional, voluntarily opt. to relocate to Pakistan, some are required, specially if Pakistan Government had sponsored their studies. Some, like me, who came to US in early childhood and were raised here, are the LAST crowd to think of going back to Pakistan, since they view US as their homeland more than anyplace, are very hard to convince. But I am an odd one here, I think I belong in Pakistan, even though I lived and spent most of my life here in US.

Insha-Allah one day, when I feel I can positively contribute something, in terms of adequate experience.

Datzburier makes a good point, but it's certainly obvious that every country wants to move up the value chain from producing and exporting low value products to higher value added products with advanced engineering, design, manufacturing, and real intellectual property. We shouldn't be happy at the low end of the food chain, esp since we are being attacked from below by countries with even better comparative advantage in natural resources or labor costs. The thing to keep in mind is this: we can't become a more advanced economy if the building blocks aren't there. You mention Japan, Singapore, Malaysia etc - these countries have 100% literacy, even higher than the US. We can't build cars or micro processors etc if 70% of the people, and 90% of the women, are illiterate. Start with the building blocks, the rest will follow. Education is Job #1, and this government is pursuing more responsible social policies; it will take time.

Rover Bhai, good post. We can still export Mangoes and Rice, as well as REVOS, Electric Fans, Motorbikes, Computer Parts, and other high end Engineering Equipment to boost our Exports figures, which are growing at a healthy rate.

Good case in point. America still exports Agricultural products all over the world, yet, it is one of the most technologically advanced country in the world. Americans are using their Technology to boost their agriculture. We can use machines and sophisticated cultivation techniques, to boost our agricultural output and boost our agricultural exports as well, along with focusing on our engineering sector and diversify our National Exports, by developing our Engineering sector.

Export all the things, auto parts, cars, fans, lights, clothes, toothbrushes, whatever, along with Mangoes and rice. More exports are always better than more Imports.
