What to do if buyer is not transferring car on his name?

Hello all,

I sold a car , XLi 3 years back. The buyer said he is going to transfer on his name but the hasn't done it. It's running on Open transfer. The guy to whom I sold has sold it further. It's still on my name. I fear if it was misused, I might fall into trouble.

What should I do to ensure I am no more linked to that car?

Dont worry on that hope you have a copy of sale deed or any agreement letter even on a blank paper which proves that you sold the vehicle to the new owner

anything wrong happens 1st person to get arrested is you, then the rest of the buyers' hope & pray that everyone is sane like you keeping track of buyer ...

on safe side you can write a letter to excise office with copies of sale & transfer deed present it to eto personally and get it received / stamped with date / time of document acceptance at eto office. those documents will be made part of the file on date of submission., after that date anything happening, will be traced to the person who purchased it from you, as per sale deed cnic & delivery letter.

I believe there should he a rule for such off the record transfers. Car registration office should be notified and buyer should be given a time limit to ensure it otherwise a fine be imposed. The car is now sold 3 times and I am sure the fourth buyer will be told that it's first owner car.

I fully understand what are you going through. Been through the same situation almost 3 years ago...sold a car back in May 2015 and to date it is on my name... I do have the sale deed etc with me (and thinking of getting it framed soon ), and I also posted the details of the buyer and date on the Pakwheels thread through which I sold the car.... just to have another proof in worst case.

This is how it happens in Australia.

• You get a form from the rego office. It splits from the middle. One part is for the owner and other is for the seller.
• Both owner and seller fill in both parts of the forms.
• Owner then removes the number plates, hands over the car to the new owner, go to the rego office and submits his part of the form along with the number plates.
• After this the new owner has 30 days to register the car in his name by submitting the part of his form and pay the stamp duty and rego fee.

I wonder why they don't implement that here, it's very straight forward and convenient for both parties.

I also sold a car 3 years ago and in records it is still on my name. I'm worried too even I've sale deed and dealer involved in selling that car. There must be a process in excise that if owner report a sold car it should be removed from his name and heavy fine to the buyer who don't transfer withing specified time.

Well...tell him to get it transferred or you will go for FIR.
We had a Corolla 88 which we sold in 1993 and it is still in my Dad's name. The car probably has changed multiple hands by now. I talked to a friend about it he jokingly asked why it was bothering me now after 25 years.

Hi guys, so a little update for anyone coming in with the same issue: I went to the local excise office today, they asked me to get a Rs.50/- stamp paper and write the detail on it (the story that I sold my car and it is still on my name, Kindly block/suspend the registration). I did that, came back and got it attested and then signed by the ETO. the application was then submitted and the vehicle was suspended within minutes! taa-dah!

Lodge a complaint on citizan's portal as well, FIA and excise will take care of it

I bought a car from Toyota sure, they took the payment, gave me the keys and delivered the car WITHOUT the file. Said pay us, we will pay the agent to get it transferred to your name and then and only then will you get the return file.

I called CPLC today on 25.06.2021 and they informed that by submitting sale documents to them at their Governor House Karachi office, they will add remarks, " SOLD BUT NOT TRANSFERRED ". This can be helpful in current scenario where lot of vehicles have the same issue, which should be resolved simultaneously by Government by giving options to citizens for sending blocking requests online via SMS, or E mail etc for the this common issue.

I had sold a used car that was in my mother's name - Suzuki Margalla AAE 863 - after getting her approval in Oct. 2018.

As of 2021, the car is still in my mom's name who resides in the US.

I hope the new buyer(s) don't do anything silly as I've misplaced the sales deed somehow. I think I will show this PW post as a record if the police comes to my door as a proof that I had sold the car.

Salam same situation here I sold mini pajero which is on my wife name but I don't have any sale deed. I asked that person many times to transfer it but he said OK only.
I am worried, is there any option in karachi excise to lodge complaint or bock registration from own nsme

Post an ad in the local papers and write a letter to the Deputy commissioner excise civic center. Mentioning that i am not related to these vehicles. That is the only legal way. There is no law of registration suspension.

if there is no sale deed, just lodge an FIR declaring the vehicle as stolen. you are no more connected to that vehicle.
