The VW in the pics above your post is a Jetta. I like the Passat too. Drives like a Buick Le Sabre should have and looked too, else GM wouldn't have been in this mess!. Spotted a rather dirty ZEN today. The owner paid RS85,000 for it and spent another 20grand or so and hasn't had problems for the past two years he has owned the car,

The 'VDi' diesel is the most popular Swift in it's last year of production, the i-20 continues to be a best seller for Hyundai and the red Fiesta looks stock on the outside but is rally spec and engine tuned by Ford Racing. A sleeper, but not for sale unfortunately!. Infact the red car is a 1st gen Fiesta and a factory car. Ford is entering the Indian racing circuit for the first time this year!.

@nick, my bad, mistaked Jetta wid Passat, the front luks ripped from a Golf nd the rear of a Passat, it is catering the City/Sx4 market or the Civic/Corolla market?

as some body was telling me VW Passat if localy produced is a competition for Civics and Corollas, while i had a feeling they were competing the Merc C class nd the Beemer 3 series.

Altho if the Indian nd Pakistani markets plan to omit the Mehran / Maruti 800cc, the Zen with a Efi option is an ideal replacement, id definetly love to own one if priced reasonably, coz these small cuties are realy easy to go on the run,

Park them any where without any tension, but i have to be carefull while parking a Corolla or a Vitz.

The Jetta is based on the Golf and competes with the Civic/Corolla/Sonata/Octavia etc. Both the Jetta and Passat are assembled with local content in India and the Passat's main competition is it's cousin the Skoda Superb Accord,Camry etc., all retailing for RS18-RS20lacs approx. The C-class/3-series start at RS24lacs here, brand new and used even less!.The Alto has taken the place of the M800 and sales figures show that. Alto sales average 17000 units a month while M800 sales average 3500-4000 mostly in town and rural areas as the new emission norms prevent sale of the 800 in urban areas. You right about Suzuki coming up with a new small car. It's about time!.

@nick, in India they did come up wid the Zen nd world wide Maruti800/Mehran/Alto is replaced by the Alto it self so we cant say mch. but they can come with some thing with a change.

the Alto 800 was expected in 2006, april, rumours then said Suzuki Swift nd Alto 800 coming, Cultus nd Mehran to say byby, but that didnt happen, nd we came to c the Swift in 2010 wen the world is saying byby to it. lets hope we get a Alto 800 soon, as that shape has stoped production in other countries too.

There is an alternative in India from Maruti for those who think the Alto is 'not happening', but want an affordable contemporary small car and are on a limited budget, namely the A-Star and i must admit i've given it very little play in this thread. Froggy looking, but steadily climbing the sales chart thanks to Maruti's skillful marketing machine. For info click on:

Also, the Cervo is planned for the Indian market though no official notification yet from Maruti. The all new Wagon-R and Swift have been confirmed for release and spyshot pics can be found in almost all Indian auto forums/blogs.

Adjacent to my Maruti dealer's service station is a TATA-FIAT dealership and after i picked up my car dropped in to see what's new for the new year!. The 2010 FIAT Punto was in the house and available for RS6.04lacs(on the road price) fully loaded with a 1.4liter petrol engine and equipment included power everything, tilt adjustable steering, alloys, 15" tires, remote entry and so many geegaws i've forgotten. The engine is quite responsive and packs a punch for either city or long distance driving. Limited stock clearance offer of RS4.56lacs for the 2009 red(or available color) TATA Indica Vista petrol hatch as long as stocks last.See for yourselves...

Dropped in at my Maruti-Suzuki dealer to pick up a gift voucher on the way back and saw a nice looking black Grand Vitara in the showroom. Went in and took some pics of the A-Star too. The A-Star VXi model in the pic lists at RS4.13lac on the road.Discounts and incentives apply which can bring the price down by about 20 grand. Both are 2010 models and i must say the Vitara looks spiffy now, especially the interior which has been redone. I'm tempted!.

Maruti-Suzuki sold 95,000 plus cars in January 2010. There has to be a reason and being a customer myself, i know the answer. It is made up of two words, "customer service". They make you feel like you bought a Benz and that's the key to their success, even though they have the audacity to add a boot to the Swift and even more audacity to call the car "D'zire"!. Prompt service where the dealer actually dreads a call from the parent office inquiring about a complaint, reasonable costs and complete honesty in all dealings. Nothing less. You will find very few complaints about Maruti's service in any of the Indian auto forums/blogs.Why can't Suzuki replicate this business model in the rest of the world?.Anyways, more of Maruti-Suzuki views in this page.

I saw this perfectly maintained one owner 2002 ZEN and as i was taking the pic one of the service guys at my Maruti service station told me it's for sale @RS80,000!. Nice car.

No, A-Star is compeletly new car. Splash is actually named as Ritz here as the name Splash is copyrighted by Ford in India.

A Star is priced between Rs 3.45 to 4.07 lacs ex showroom Delhi.
