Two of my fav VW products sold in India, the "New" Beetle and Passat!.The Jetta sedan is the best seller upto now. The POLO might change that. Well, the base "Trendline" POLO model retails at RS4.98 lacs on the road ex-Chennai, minus the fog lamps and alloys. Expect the "Trendline" to be the popular choice among middle income car buyers. Walk-ins at the particular dealer i took pics at was brisk when i was there and same throughout the day i was told, which means a lot of public interest in this model. Interior space in the POLO is adequate at front but a bit tight at the rear and i heard a lot of comparisons with the Ford(India) Figo which has loads of space for it's size. I know the POLO will sell only because german products are valued here and people will be willing to pay a little more for the same over other manufacturers . Cheers!.

A very warm welcome for the BEAT here. Approx. 10,000 bookings in the 1st month alone and averaging 2500-3000 a month after. GM had it's highest ever sales in February since it entered the Indian market thanks to the BEAT. The new Aveo sedan and some other forthcoming models will only put a larger smile on the General's lips.

While driving around today i came upon this red Ford Maverick. I guess it must be an Aussie model!. And, the poor Logan. One sees quite a few on the road but not enough to cut the mustard. Renault-Nissan has learnt it's lesson and hence we shall see the Micra, Fluence and other more contemporary models in the months to come.

Chevrolet first entered India in 1928. General Motors was the first company to set up an automotive assembly plant in India. The first Chevrolet car in India was the National Series AB Touring with wooden wheels. Chevrolet however, had to close shop in India in 1954 following Indian national policy, and the Indian Chevrolet went on a sabbatical. Although it closed operations in 1954, it has been in the Indian market as a part of tie-ups with Hindustan Motors to produce Bedford trucks, Vauxhall cars, Allison transmissions and off-highway equipment. In 1994, General Motors India was incorporated as a 50-50 joint venture with C.K. Biria Group of Companies. In 1999 it became a fully owned subsidiary of General Motors when General Motors Overseas Corporation bought the remaining shares.
Chevrolet made its comeback in India in 2003 and has emerged as one of the fastest growing brand names in India. GM India has expanded its dealership network to 95 sales points and over 110 service centers. The network is still being expanded to cater to its recent entry into the mini-car segment with the Chevrolet Spark. In addition, two new parts distribution centers have also been set up in Maharashtra and Delhi to supplement the two existing centers in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
GM India is the pioneer in introducing several industry first programs including a centralized 24x7 call center to attend to customer complaints and provide any information related to GM India’s products and services. Chevrolet also provides additional peace of mind to its customers with an industry first assurance of fixed cost for 45,000 kilometers or three years on service and maintenance with a “Cost of Ownership” program. A customer can pay a predetermined, fixed amount while buying a Chevrolet product rest assured that if its maintenance costs exceed this predetermined amount, the difference will be reimbursed. Other first programs introduced by the company earlier included chauffeur training programs, mobile road show caravans, the OK 5-Star pre-owned car program, and a best in class warranty of three years/100,000 kilometers, service holidays and fuel economy rallies.
GM India presently produces the Chevrolet Optra Magnum, the Chevrolet Tavera, the Chevrolet SRV, the Chevrolet Aveo, the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA and the Chevrolet Spark at its plant in Haiol near Baroda, Gujarat. Hindustan Motors originally built this General Motors plant and in 1994 General Motors modernized it. In 2007, the capacity was expanded from 60,000 units to 85,000 units to meet increased demand for Chevrolet vehicles. In the meantime, GM India’s second plant (being constructed at Talegaon, near Pune in Maharashtra) is expected to be in operation by the last quarter of 2008, with an initial annual production of 140,000 vehicles.

The General is on a roll here selling 2835 BEAT cars in February and sales for this year is expected to cross the 1,50,000 car mark. I'm sure it will make you happy as a GM fan and thanks for interest in this thread. Same to all too!. My only regret re: GM is that they don't sell US cars here other than the Hummer range. The Malibu will be a hit in this market, i'm sure.

So the GM line-up is Chevrolet dominated... Nice.
But what surprises me is that why GM hasn't launched Cadillac despite seeing big names officially present in India. Any word on it?
And yeah prosperous GM worldwide makes me happy lol. I wish GM the same success here in Pakistan. So far their decisions are not exploiting the situation which is great.

The Polo is a great little car and the newer ones are starting to look more and more like the Golf, which isnt a bad thing IMO. Pity I cant say the same about Nissan Micra sorry but IMO its a ugly little car for some reason most of the ones I've seen on the roads here were driven by Pakistani's or Indian's Hey the Enfields look awesome, thanks for posting that pics mate

The POLO does look like a smaller Golf. I agree. But it is a far superior car to any of it's predecessors. And, gone is the stark black teutonic dash too with the pleasant dualtone. Again, the current Micra looks far superior to it's predecessors and my amazement at the build quality of Indian made cars nowadays is a tribute to the workmanship ethic of the Indian worker , which is mistrued for 'bragging'.lol.

Meanwhile , i've been showcasing the 2010 Maruti-Suzuki SX4 in it's various colors in this thread. You can see the SX4 in Clear Beige, Pearl Arctic White, Midnight Black and French Eclair in preceding pages. Now it is 'Oyster Blue'.

The Q5 is imported and costs approx RS37lacs ex-Chennai. About GM in India, they recently retired the SRV which IMO was their best product. The mistake was that GM priced it a little on the high side initially and then realized their mistake when it was too late. Though it isn't on the official brochure one can buy a SRV whle stocks last.
