get a paper and pen and jot down
your needs
your wants
your expertise in photography
your interests in photography
then jot down what equipment will serve your purpose, that is a DSLR (obviously), a lot of different lenses or a limited number of lenses, movie shooting, tripod etc
then list down items with their costs
and pick a set from these items that come under budget.
this will help, i know its hard, but this work and proper decision will pay you off in long term.
PS: a kit lens serves for a lot of focul lengths, so it is serving as many lenses.
Yes a prime lens will (among many other aspects) be sharp, fast and will have the option of large (but fixed) aperture, thus high quality in low light
PPS: once you will purchase 550D/600D/5100D and start photo-shooting, it will be great no matter what you choose. its like having to decide if a 45% grey suit is what looks best or a 65% grey one. but when you buy one and go home and wear it, it looks great no matter which you choose.
