Why Alloy Rims.?

Salam to all. I am very new to cars. I have bought a car(Mehran) some days ago. I want to know that why people go for Alloy rims instead od normal rims? what is the advantage of them other than that they are good looking.

I disagree, alloys are more durable than the steel wheels that come with cars. Those bend very easily in potholes. Its not a matter of lightweight expensive alloys at all.

But here we use because of majburi or for looks
usually local steel wheels are pathetic in quality , leaks, out of balance , warp simply saying poor in quality

do u know u can dent out the steel ones with a hammer?(very easy to do) done and tried

alloys on the other hand "crack".and repair sucks.

it takes a lot of force to break an alloy rim unless its chinese or pakistani

majority rims are chinese and local out in market specially in small sizes and will probably even weigh more then original steel ones

Okay, once you dent it back out, there goes the stability of the car and the wheel-- the balancing will be completely out. Nope, sorry, not taking that risk

And in my experience, alloys which are even FAIRLY decent do not crack. It would take a LOT of force to do so. I know that from experience:

1. Back in the days of steel wheels on one of our 'Rollas (yes shutup); I remember hitting a pothole which was fairly small, it bent inwards and the wheelcap broke off.

2. These days half of Karachi is dug up, my car fell into a really bad pothole a week ago; the wheel made a terrible "thud" and got stuck inside the hole, which was surprising considering its a 17" wheel. After I forced the car out in reverse and had the wheel examined, there was no damage to it at all.

Alloys have a definite advantage over steelies, those are out like the dinosaur.

Most people go for the alloys as they want dash drama........ very few have any performance related factors in mind........... and our nation believes in bhair chaal religiously so they go for the alloys as they see most people are installing them......... as one of the most common thing these days have been "oyay lcd lagwayi??? " WTF ........... that rubbish infront of the driver ............... just to boost "meri gari mein LCD hay" .............

i completely agree with u Cylestyne ... alloys are alot more durable ... it depends whre u take thm frm ... obviously if ur takin alloys which are either locally made or frm china u might nt gt the standard of quality tht we are talkin abt hre ... do u knw tht the alloy rims tht are made frm taiwan have a 2 year warranty with thm .. bt obviously they are more expensive and so nobody goes fr thm ... u can gt the same chinese rims fr alot less ... and thn people expect the same quality ... !

Its more about looks. I agree with cylestyne that alloys are far more durable in road cars, Baluchistan Steel sucks. Local steel/alloy rims have serious issues.

Btw, 90% rally/endurance spec SUVs use Steel Rims due to weight and durability factor. And their steel rims are twice expensive in-comparison to alloys. Nissan Vehicle in Last Dakar used 904L Grade steel which is used by Rolex in their Sea-Dweller.
