Why Cars are so expensive in Pakistan?

I have recently started a hunt to buy a used Honda Civic in a budget for 15 lacs. I was looking at pakwheels and I was really surprised to see the prices of used cars in Pakistan and especially I was shocked when my Indian friend showed me the prices of cars in India.

Honda Civic 2011 in india : 450,000 INR (753,508 PKR)
Honda Civic in 2011 in pakistan 16,00,000PKR (987,592 INR)

so why the cars are so expensive in Pakistan, it is more than double?

Yaar... India is manufacturing cars and does not have monopoly of any company... There are 30 automakers in india of which 10 are pure indian companies..... That is the level of competition there is in india....last week i was surprised that jaguar the company whose cars i used to love turned out to be a pure indian company.....

Jaguar was a british company, sold to different companies over the time. it was sold by Ford in 2008 financial crisis to Tata. Otherwise India is still far from producing a gem like Jaguar.

Dear many reasons for high prices, some of them as below

Demand & supply gap of new cars most people opt for low millage used cars instead of 6 month wait for delivery
No competition in market, few option in each segment.
Society has developed a mind set to consider cars as status symbol or commodity instead of a mean of transportation.

First priority of a buyer to the RESALE VALUE of the cars instead of its options also increased the used cars value in local markets..

Used car prices are also derived from the prices of new cars, is't it so.
I had Honda City 2007 bought zero meter for 8,40,500 and sold it in 2012 for 10,40,000. Why, cause the new car prices had gone way up.

Simple answer is competition. When there is competition, prices are closer to their fair value.
In Pakistan, we have Oligopoly. Had there been competition in the form of many players having assembling plants here, not only prices of locally assembled cars would have been far lower, their quality would have been far higher than what we get.

But lobbying, corruption, bribery has more power in our Islamic republic than allowing fair competition.

Your question should be "why are used cars so expensive in Pakistan?". New civic is similarly priced to Pakistan, its just used market that is overpriced. Civic X is launching in India next month with a price tag of 1.5 million INR | 2.42 million PKR, same as Pakistan.

People are talking about taxes and monopoly. I don't see any monopoly in used cars market. People are just paying high price for old cars, doesn't matter if local or imported. Don't know why.

Pakistan:
Low mileage 2011 Civic 1.8 AT = 15 PKR lakh | 60% of new Civic.

India:
Low mileage 2011 Civic 1.8 AT = 5 INR lakh, 8 PKR lakh | 30% of new Civic.

In USA Civic starts 1t around 19K USD. How this is comparable to price in PK ? Plus in US, it has a lot more features than the one compared to PK.
In India Honda City price starts at 8,58,123 Indian = 13,83,560 PKR. How is this comparable to PK prices ?
Also last time I checked, accord was placed at around Pakistan 6.5 million compared to around 10 mill plus in PK.

And honda city in india is sixth generation... Plus ciaz costs 7.5 lacs or 12 lac pakistani rupees in india.... Ciaz is a 19 lac car here....

We were comparing India and Pakistan, not western countries. Cars are expensive in a lot of Asian countries.

New Honda Civic 2017 India Launch

There isn't much difference in features now except build quality. I checked its features on UAE website and the only thing extra I could find was tire pressure monitor.

This time, both Honda and Toyota has offered a lot of features at reasonable prices in Civic and Corolla. The quality is questionable though, like the quality of everything in this country.

In India Toyota Camry starts from 49 lac PKR :). I just read the Civic article and it seemed to me that they are comparing Civic with Camry and talking about keeping it low price to give it an edge over camry.
